Venice to Vienna to Salzburg to Venice

We are 4 Adult Australians wanting to travel from Venice (after disembarking cruise ship) to Vienna on 23rd September.

Leaving Vienna for Salzburg on 26th September

Leaving Salzburg for Venice on 28th to fly home to Australia on 30th September.

What sort of tickets for the rail do we need. Can we get any discounts as 2 of us are seniors. What is the cheapest way to travel.? What is a Vorteilscard. Can we get one, is it worth it? What does it entail. Can we apply here in Australia?

Thank you for your help

As you are both travelling in September, your best bet is to book now for your tickets (tickets in Europe are open for booking up to 90 days before the date of travel). There are no discounts for Seniors if you are from overseas. That would be your cheapest way of travel.

Here are the info you require to make your decisions:

There is only one DIRECT train from Venice to Vienna, that is the Intercity leaving Venezia Santa Lucia station at 3:59pm, arriving in Vienna at 11:27pm (cost €49 for booking early, book with www.trenitalia.com)

However, there are 3 direct bus/train combination a day, leaving Venice Tronchetto bus stop at 09;20, 11:20 and 18:20. The cost of this whole trip (reserved seating on the bus) is €29 for booking early.

Book with www.oebb.at

More info here:

The changeover to train is at Villach, you just cross the road from the bus stop to the train station

Vienna to Salzburg is by Westbahn private train, cost €23.90.

If you prefer to book, you can book the discounted ticket with www.oebb.at for one of the Austrian railways Railjet, price €19 for booking early (if the Sparschiene price is still available)

For Salzburg to Venice, the easiest option is as above, but including the sector of Salzburg to Villach, then utilise the connection of the OEBB Intercity bus to Venice Tronchetto. price should be €29 for booking early

I must stress the importance of booking early, as September is not too far away in terms of pre-booking discounted tickets
