How long would you recommend to spend in Salzburg

We are planning on going to Salzburg in January next year as part of our vacation.

I am in the process of working out our itinerary, specifically how long to stay where.

How long would you advise that we would need to spend in Salzburg to see Old Town, and the main sights, cathedrals, ice cave, toy museum, sights from the Sound of Music?

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Salzburg itself: 1-2 days

Surroundings of Salzburg: 1-4 days (depending on activities chosen)

Ice caves are located in Werfen as well as Obertraun, hence not in Salzburg. Moreover, they are closed in winter.

Hihi, we are planning to visit Vienna and Salzburg in mid-September. We plan to stay in Vienna for 6 to 7 days, and 3 to 4 days in Salzburg. Please advise whether this would be an optimal arrangement. And what would you recommend to us to do during our stay in Salzburg? Thank you.

We spent 5 full days in Vienna and 4 full days in Salzburg (incl. Xmas) and that worked pretty well although I could happily visit both places again and hope to do so.

1 Salzburg day was a full day trip to Ramsau for a Xmas day sleigh ride, another was to the salt mine at Hallein. The rest of the time was happily spent exploring Salzburg, with a large chunk of time spent at the fortress.

Number of days you need is the number of days YOU need.

Everybody is different and have different interests.

Assume you are not just flying in to Salzburg from Oz or a day or 2 then flying home so what is your overall itinerary. This will/may have a bearing on what you see/do.

Some people like the city, others spend more time out of it than in it and some do it as a day trip from Munich. Everything depends on you personally.

People staying in Salzburg can spend more time outside it than in it for example

I would spend 3-4 days - it is much smaller than Vienna and in 2 days you can see old town, castle, Schloss Hellbrunn, etc. - the rest depends on your interests - there are lovely lakes and mountains and pretty villages around Salzburg. You can also spend 1 week and see many interesting things.
