Do it with the Bayern Ticket.

This ticket is valid from Monday to Sunday for one day of your choice from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day on Saturday and Sunday and bank holidays from 0 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day. It can be used on all local trains (Interregio-Express, Regional-Express, Regionalbahn, S-Bahn) and the entire transport system in Bavaria.

Second class prices:

-1 person : EUR 22.00

-2 people : EUR 26.00

-3 people : EUR 30.00

-4 people : EUR 34.00

-5 people : EUR 38.00

Book your Bayern ticket at www.bahn.de. Don't worry. The ticket covers Salzburg as well, even if not in Bavaria.

You should be aware that the lake (and boat landings in Stock for the Herrenchiemsee palace) is about 4km from the main line train station in Prien. You can take a bus from the Prien RR station to Stock or walk on a plaeasant pedestrian walk.

Note spelling of lake: Chiemsee

The easiest way to get a Bayern ticket is at one of the kiosks at any of the Munich RR staions. While many trains to Prien start at the Munich main station (hbf.), if you are at the eastern end of the city, all trains stop at the Ostbahnhof (east station).
