Don't be caught out like us - people told us we could get a connecting bus from Villach to Udine without reservations (we were meeting friends in Venice) - We booked our train ticket in a small town out of Salzburg (He said *just get to Villach & jump on the bus!) - Then we checked at a train station where we had to change trains (*just get to Villach - there will be a bus!)
YES we got to Villach - threw our backpacks under the bus & lined up (we had been TOLD *just buy your bus tickets on the bus!)
Fortunately someone in the line said to us *get your passport out with your reservation ticket! .... TICKET ??? WHAT RES.TICKET?
We quickly grabbed our backpacks out (much to the disgust of a very unhappy luggage man) and raced to the Station!
*SORRY SOLD OUT! *Come back tomorrow!
Now, Can you believe there is only ONE Bus to Udine in Peak Season??? It was 3pm (or maybe 4pm) and he was telling us *Come back tomorrow!!!!!
In FIVE weeks of backpacking through Europe, this was our only hiccup - I guess we can't complain, but when we ended up in Slovenia I was starting to wonder about the Austrian Rail Staff and their information !
We eventually made it to Venice, via a few Slovenian towns .... fortunately our plane to Greece wasn't until the following day :)
