Boat travel on the Danube between Krem and Melk

We will be flying from Canada to Europe to travel the Danube between Krem and Melk which we are told is most scenic with old villages along the way. We would like to travel with the flow of the river and return by either bus or train.

I would like to know the best city in which to arrive, suggestions of 'must see' historical towns & villages. Also nice small hotels. We are retired so needn't rush our days. Any information would be great.

If you want to go with the river flow then sail from Melk to Krems. But why return to Melk? Far better would be to get off the boat at the pretty village of Dürnstein and stay there. When you say "best city in which to arrive" do you mean to fly into? If so then Vienna would be best.

We would be flying from Canada and do want to connect with London UK either enroute or return trip.

Thank you for your suggestion. Rita Perren

Your best arrival point if just looking for the Wachau area would be Vienna.

The train from Vienna to Krems takes about 1 hour - train Vienna - Melk a little longer

info here

some nice places to consider for a stay

Haus Burkhardt

in center of Spitz - 5 minutes walk to Danube and boat docks.

This fine house has been renovated 1- 2 years ago.

rooms and apartments breakfast served in a nice surrounding- fine quiet garden- many dining choices close by including the Strand Café directly on the Danube.

Easy bike rides along the river- through close by vineyards

Joching / Weissenkirchen

some of the best wine in this area - fine dining in their own restaurant including a beautiful garden- rooms and apartments- family owned and operated

Hotel Sanger Blondel

center of Durnstein- good food in their tree shaded garden - nice people - walk through the faamed village-climb to the castle ruins- walk or bike through vineyards.

Boat stop 5 minutes from the hotel.

Quick bus ride to Krems for sightseeing - fun to take the boat to melk

great chances for wine tasting-

perhaps continue your vacation toward Salzburg/ Munich-

consider open jaw flight ticket arrive in Vienna return from Munich.even via London

Star Alliance partners- Austrian Air, Lufthansa, Air Canada make this possible- saves travel time and perhaps some money too.
