Car trip from Munich - Prague - Vienna - Salzburg - Munich?

Looking at the feasibility of doing this circuit by rental car in late May. It seems like it would give maximum flexibility to see the sights in the various countries.. Any opinions from those who have done similar trip?

There is one thing for sure - you will visit a bunch of great cities with gorgeous architecture and unique ambience. Be informed that you need a toll sticker when driving on Austrian expressways (superior road network with abbreviations A and S). The same applies for the Czech Republic. Also check whether you are allowed to take your rental car into the Czech Republic. In the past rental agencies did not like or allow it. But times have changed - just for info! In Vienna it might be better to park your car in one of the Park&Ride Garages which are located in the suburbs and have access to the Viennese subway system.

"In Vienna it might be better to park your car in one of the Park&Ride Garages" - the same goes for Prague, which is a nightmare to drive in and parking is expensive and thin on the ground. In fact the same goes for most cities in most of Europe - a car is (usually) fine in between, but is actually a severe restriction when you reach built-up areas. Also bear in mind that the cost of fuel is rocketing at the moment what with the Libyan situation, etc., and as Mikey says, German rental agencies remain reluctant to allow their vehicles into the Czech Republic, especially higher-value ones, and stick shift is the norm.

Most people who do this 'circuit' do it by train - it doesn't have to cost a lot - you can do this whole journey for about €100 or less, and you will still see pretty much everything that you wanted to see, you will be a lot more relaxed, and you will have a lot more money to spend when you get there :)

Should you decide that you might consider the train, we would be happy to give you advice.

My husband and I are planning to travel this exact route in April and we were going to rent a car but after reading this post we were wondering if you could relay your information about the train route and how to get tickets, etc. A reply would be much appreciated!

Thank you!!

You also need an International Driving Permit to drive in Austria (probably the Czech Republic, too). It costs about $15 at AAA, and you need 2 passport size photos. AAA will take the photos for an extra charge if you don't have any. Took me about 25 minutes to get mine including having them take the photos.

Munich to Prague - easy way by express bus €29 http://www.expressbus.de/en/index.html - you can do it a bit cheaper if you get the direct train and use a Bayern-Boehmen ticket to Plzeň (€34 for up to 5 passengers), combined with a group ticket from Plzeň to Prague - for two it is €10 buy on the www.cd.cz e-shop make sure you buy the ticket for the same train that comes from Munich.), therefore for two it is c.€22, but it takes longer. Get the bus.

Prague - Vienna is €19 https:/… - choose the English option or €38 on the day - you can stop off on the way as many times as you like - e.g. Brno guardian.co.uk/travel/2010/jun/19/low-cost-f…

Vienna - Salzburg is €19 in advance from www.oebb.at or using the rival company www.westbahn.at on the day for €22 (but I think there are some special offers at the moment). Or you can buy a ticket on the day - for two it is about €39 taking into account the group discount (a group is 2 or more passengers) - with that ticket you can stop as many times as you like along the route.

Salzburg - Munich by Bayern Ticket which is €29 for up to 5 passengers. Buy on the day, and can be used on all regional trains after 9 am.

We drove in Austria and didn't require an international driving permit. The car does need a vignette, which is a sticker that is on the windshield saying certain highway taxes have been paid. Any rental company should have them on their cars already, but it won't hurt to ask.

Yostwl has provided the correct information on the necessity of having an international driving permit in Austria. Both the main Austria tourism website and the US Department of State note that an international driving permit is required to drive in Austria:

NB the information given on the first of those links is incorrect - it states that 'an international drivers license is required' - DO NOT get an in international drivers 'license' as this is the subject of several scams - it is the International Drivers PERMIT that you want.

9. Re: Car trip from Munich - Prague - Vienna - Salzburg - Munich?

With the significant driving limitations inside the main cities of Prague (stay near Charles Bridge) and Vienna (stay inside Ringstrasse), I would take the train for the Munich to Prague segment, suggest Student Agency bus to Cesky Krumlov, then shuttle to Vienna.

After Vienna tour, I would rent an "Austria" car for travel to Salzburg and its surrounds. Then to escape the inter-country drop fee, I would rent the "Germany" car in Freilassing and return the Austria car at the Salzburg airport. Heading back to Munich, given your allocated time, I would travel through Bavaria and visit the castles in Linden and Hohenschwangau.

Happy Planning!

It is quicker to get the bus from Munich to Prague, and probably more comfortable as well http://www.expressbus.de/en/index.html - all details for other options given in answer 5 above.
