I am visiting Nicosia hopefully in November about 20 -28th. Can anyone tell me if there are interesting things to see that are open at this time of year. Also what the temperature is likely to be. I am a single male who is interested in historic buildings and churches, cultural activities, nice places to meet local people and shops that have interesting art and craft items that are not tacky and touristy. Look forward to your messages. |

Can't help much bit I can tell you that temperature will be about 20 degrees (not exactly summer but certainly not cold yet). There are many things to see in Nicosia in terms of historical interest but I don;t know them as people were taking me around. I remember the old city was very impressive, the Ledra Palace where you can cross to the other site of the island is a must to see even if you do not cross, the old "PYLH of Famagusta" . Many things I am just the worst person to describe. I hope someone else will "jump in" and give you solid details. :)

All of the museums and churches are open year long. The museums in particular have very limited hours during the week and most are closed on Sundays. I would strongly suggest purchasing Top10Cyprus (Your gude to the 10 Best of Everything) published by DK-Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides. It is compact enough to carry along and reasonably priced. Within Nicosia, you can easily walk around the town and find many historical sites and buildings. I would also suggest venturing across the Green Zone (not as initimidating as one might think) and visiting Northern Nicosa (Turkish occupied). You can easily walk to Selima Mosque. There are many other great sights in No. Cyprus, however without a car they are difficult to reach. We visited for three weeks during the summer and tried to avoid the "crowded tourist spots" such as the harbor and beach towns, although they were highly recommended by others. We did travel into the Troodos mountains, which were just beautiful. And the churches and buildings were remarkable. In particular, Kykkos Monastery. Best advice - relax and enjoy. There are many friendly locals always willing to share advice and history with you. We are heading back on Saturday for another two weeks, and I can't wait. In particular, be sure to have a KEO beer!

The Archeological Museum is quite interesting, and within walking distance is the 'old part' of Nicosia with the Venetian Walls. Within the walls you will find the Levention Museum hosting exhibits about Nicosia and travelling exhibitions, may still be running - Venice in Cyprus, which is very interesting. St. John's cathedral and the icon museum in the archibishopric is interesting. You could also try the Hammam of Omeriye refurbished under UNOPS I think and a great treat. Definitely get a car and visit the Troodos for the UNESCO painted churches. The villages will be partly empty this time of the year with mostly the local inhabitants and only other cypriots visiting over the weekend. (Kykko monastery will still be busy by tourists)
