Taking self drive hire cars from South to Northern Cyprus

We will be holidaying in Cyprus in April/May spending the first week in the South before heading to the North for the second week. The accommodation has been booked but there is the question of logistics for us to consider. Is it now possible to take a self drive hire car in the South across the border to the North? Your advice would be much appreciated.

Yes you can do that without any problem but also you can get a taxi from the south to the north and hire a car in the north which will be the best option aconomicaly as the car hire prices are very cheap in the north.

We were looking at doing this but found it very difficult to hire a car.It appears neither country will accept the others insurance.

my parents are planing on flying into larnaca for a week , then hiring a car to go to Famagusta for a further week, before driving back to Larnaca to fly home. They are 69 years old, will they be able to do this?

beyaz: your local knowledge is an asset to this board. We have a few more questions. Do you know whether the major international car rental firms at Larnaca Airport will allow their vehicles to cross the North? Or would we need to use Cypriot firms? Where can we purchase the additional insurance to dirve in the North? The taxis that you mention. Do these have to be pre-booked? How much would it cost to get to Kyrenia? Many thanks in advance for your advice.

yes you can drive any car from north to the south it does not matter if it is an international or local cypriot company. you dont have to prebook the taxi, you can get one from any taxi stop and taxi prices from south to north is very expensive they charge you about 80 CPPRUS POUNDS which is about 100 british pounds...regarding to insurance they provide you it at (the border) when you are crossing the border...

And you can also drive from the north to the south but it has to be a private car not with red plate.

Can someone let me know if it is possible to hire a car at Larnaca and spend two weeks in North Cyprus with it? We will also be spending 3 nights in Paphos. I'm still unsure of the laws and need to know if this is possible! Thanks.

Currently the south still does not recognise the north of the island. All hire cars have a red number plate and they will not allow you to take a hire car from the south to the north. Best take a car to Nicosia and cross the border then get a taxi or hire another car in the north.
