Traveling from Geneva and reasonably priced accommodation

We are traveling to Geneva in June for a long weekend but would really like to spend a night in Leichstenstein.

1. How should we travel using public transport?

2. Any suggestions for b&b's in Leichstenstein? (Must stay in the country for the night- a rule my partner has!)

3. Suggestions on what we should do for the day and night

Many thanks

If you look at a map, you'd see that Geneva is at the extreme West of the country while Liechtenstein is at the extreme East. In between are the Alps. While Switzerland is not that big, we are still talking about a 4+ hours ride by train (don't even consider a car): 2 3/4 hours from Geneva to Zurich, then about 1 hour from Zurich to Sargans, then 20 to 30 minutes bus to Vaduz. Schedules and prices on http://www.sbb.ch/en.

You want a place in the middle of nowhere in Liechtenstein? Try this: http://www.suecka.li/ The website is only in German but they speak very good English. I never slept there, only ate (you can see my reviews on http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g190370-d3583437-Reviews-Berggasthaus_Sucka-Triesenberg.html) but I visited the rooms that are nice although have no bathroom in the room. You can get there by bus.

What to do in Summer in Liechtenstein? www.tourismus.li/en/activities/summer.html has it all. There are also a couple of museums in Vaduz. Please note the castle is not open for visits.

To conclude, Liechtenstein is a great place, but may-be a bit far away from Geneva especially if you are only there for a week-end. When flying, it is far better to use Zurich airport to go to Vaduz.

I was crazy enough to consider something like this as well, but only have an evening to spare. Plan is to leave Zurich (on June 15) by train at around 4 pm to Buchs, then bus to Vaduz, walk around, have dinner and come back on a late train to Zurich around 10/11 pm. Sounds crazy but doable? I checked the Liechtenstein bus website, but being illiterate in German could not understand. Do you know if there are late buses? Overall thoughts?

Is "ticking the box" crazy? Irrational, certainly, but not crazy :-)

Doable is it. And the train ride from Zurich to Sargans is nice (better to take the bus from there since it is in most of the cases saving you a connection). Schedules can be found on http://www.sbb.ch/en. Input Zurich as point of departure and "Vaduz Post" as point of arrival (and vice-versa!). Last bus leaves Vaduz at 21:50. And on June 15th, there are even later connections, but to be avoided as very long.

@Swissdiver: Could you please tell me why you don't suggest driving across Switzerland? I'm considering just such a trip next summer and would appreciate your thoughts on potential pitfalls we may encounter. Thank you!

@Travelingmatt,

I always depends whether one does the trip for the trip or for the destination. Crossing the country over several days can be quite nice actually. The next question is car or train. In Switzerland, with no doubt, train is the best choice as we have an amazing public transport system while our roads are often jammed.
