Good amount of time

What is a good amount of time to visit Iceland and the best time of year to visit? We'd like to see the gorgeous waterfalls, the glaciers, geysers, etc. Basically, we're tourists and want to see all the main tourist stuff.;) Would 4 days be enough? 5? Would 7 be too much? What area is best to stay in to visit all those wonderful attractions? Is it best to stay in Reykjavik and travel around on day trips, or split the stay among different towns to cut down on the amount of driving? Anyone have opinions on Icelandair? We can get a nonstop flight with them. Thanks!

4 days is good to see some highlights near Reykjjavik. With 5-8 days you can explore at leisure or go round the island.

You can't, in my opinion, spend too much time there! (but I'm biased - it obviously depends why you are going and what you want to see/do).

With 4-5 days you could base yourself in Reykjavik, although it is not essential. My first trip was 1 night in Reyk., and 4 nights touring the south-east. The second trip was 2 nights in Reyk. and 2 nights on the Snaefelsness peninsula to the west, although the peninsula is doable in a day. We just wanted to get there and relax, and we knew we had time to see the capital on this trip. So, 4-5 nights is quite good to get a small sample or taste of Iceland

No complaints about Icelandair.

Best time of year can depend - how cold do you like it? want to see the Northern Lights? want daylight all the time? prepared to put up with inclement weather?

I'd suggest avoid the peak time (July/August) so that you have a good choice of accommodation, and avoid the shortest days (December/January).

In the low and shoulder season, some museums close or you need to give warning to get it open. However - the best things (the scenery and the spas) are open all year...

Thanks for the info! We'd rather it not be cold if possible (at least not frigid). We were thinking perhaps early September, although I've read that the northern lights would be mid-September (if you're lucky enough to see them).

What are the odds of being able to see the sights with a rental car without getting totally lost?

Iceland is a 4-hr different time zone for us -- are we likely to experience wasted "down time" due to the time difference?

Thanks!

Yes - you can see all the sights with a rental car. For specialist trips - eg on a glacier, you can book them separately and you would be able to take a hire car there anyway.

Not sure I understand the point about "down time". Due you mean jet lag? 4 hours shouldn't be too bad.
