Itinerary

I have planned a 10 day trip to Iceland starting off with 3 nights in Reykjavik on Easter weekend and then 3 nights at Hotel Budir. We will have a hire car from day 1. We want to exploe the south but am confused as to what to do! Is it a good idea to base yourself at one hotel for 3 nights? Say Hotel Ranga? How long does it take to drive to Hofn? 6 hours from Reykjavik? Is it worth the drive? Any advice much appreciated!

Our first trip (5 dyay) to Iceland went as far as Hofn. Stunning scenery pretty much all the way, especially around Skaftafell and Vik, but if time was short, you might want to turn round at Jokulsjarlon, as Hofn is a working port and wouldn't claim to be a tourist destination. We had 2 overnight stops on the way. Depends whether you want to stop and admire a waterfall or glacier or museum or just drive.

Second trip went to Budir. Lovely coastal scenery and Snaefelsness. Wish we'd gone up the mountain.

10 days, and spending 3 (weekdays) at Búðir !!?

What are you going to do for 3 days in the Búðir area ?

In my oppinion Hotel Búðir is one of three most overrated, and overpriced hotels in Iceland. Sure, the scenery is stunning on a good day, but that´s all.

You must not forget that in April most things are closed, and so are most of the inland roads (all marked F will be closed).

And by the way, Hotel Rangá is in the group of three aswell.

I would recommend Hotel Kirkjubæjarklaustur for the south east glacier area.

The drive to Höfn is well worth the drive, (5 hours + stops).

Yep, 3 days at Budir - lots of walking in spectactular countryside which is what we like doing. Everyone has different ideas of what constitutes a good hotel - what is over-rated to one person may be just right for the next. Thanks Icelandic Guide.

Make sure the Budir is not hosting an office party if you want a quiet time (see reviews for details!)....

Thanks peterscot! I had actually seen that review too! But when in Iceland et al... ! Have now decided to stay in Hof for 1 night after hiking in the Skaftafell Park and then seeing the lagoon the following day before heading back west. It's all coming together and really looking forward to it too. Thanks!
