The exchange rate is similar to that of 2009 when it devalued.

Is it still *relatively" cheaper than years ago? We would like to visit it if it's more affordable. Thanks.

In 2007 you got under 60 ISK for one dollar, you now get 115 ISK for the dollar.

Iceland is a lot more affordable now than it was then.

Does it really matter if it's cheaper than before?

If you want to see this country just check airlines fares, accommodation and i.e. rent-a-car (or tour) prices and go if you can afford this. These are the biggest costs for sure - however of course you have to add more - depending on your expectations.

You never know if it will be cheaper or more expensive in next years.

The exchange rate is only one aspect of affordability - there is no point getting excited with a more favourable exchange rate only to find that prices have risen to reflect higher import costs .... sure for a short term there may be a windfall gain, but to an extent things tend to even out over time.

More important is how one's own currency is faring and for UK visitors £ sterling has been getting stronger thus making all overseas travel cheaper.

Be aware, if you book a trip with a travel agent priced in your own currency, they may have set the price at an older exchange rate, which may mean it is favourable to book direct to Iceland instead. It's a swings and roundabout situation, and sometimes the savings are so small they become trivial in the scheme of the trip.

In October, we got 120 ISK to the dollar. Don't know what difference it makes if it is more or less affordable now. You should look at prices for food, lodging, travel, etc. and decide if it is worth it. Personally, I think it is a beautiful and interesting country to visit and it was worth what we paid--even though it was more expensive for some things than what we would pay for the same things in the US.
