Reykjavik to Akureyri

Two questions:

1) What are the "must see" sights between Reykjavik & Akureyri for a one day drive?

2) Is it worth driving back from Akureyri to Reykjavik, or should we ditch the rental and just pay for a flight back to Reykjavik?

Thanks,

M

Indeed its just 35 now, no "F". I bought a road atlas this summer and it was still marked as F35! On another map it was marked correctly as 35. Then when I drove Kjölur this summer, even the road signs had both versions of the road number. One sign said 35, but the next one said F35... clearly an update is needed on those signs.

Ps. Even if its not an F-road anymore, 2wd rental cars ar not allowed to drive it.

To reply to the original post.

1) The road between Reykjavik and Akureyri is Road #1 part of the ringroad. Paved all the way and ca 400 km long. Without stops that would make the driving time ca 4 1/2 hours.

You will want to make a few stops. Here are some suggestions:

- Short detour to Borðeyri, an old trading post.

- Longer detour to Hvítserkur http://atlasobscura.com/place/hvitserkur and Borgarvirki northiceland.is/WhattoSeeDo/…borgarvirki

- Kolugjúfur northiceland.is/WhattoSeeDo/…kolugjufur

- Kálfshamarsvík northiceland.is/WhattoSeeDo/…kalfshamarsvik

- Vatnsdalshólar northiceland.is/WhattoSeeDo/…vatnsdalsholar

- The swimming pool at Hofsós! It has one of the best views of any swimming pool in Iceland, you see the Drangey island and the fjord.

- Do you like river rafting? northiceland.is/WhattoSeeDo/…

2) Sure, it makes sense to drive one way, and fly the other way back. Check with your rental company regarding one way rentals. I would recommend renting from Höldur http://www.holdur.is/en/

We flew to Akureyri and drove back to Reykjavik. Budget charged 18000 for drop off at another location.
