i am trying to decide what to do in Sweden after our weekend in Stockholm.(We are arriving on July 25th)

One thought was to take a train to Gothenburg. Is there enough to do in that area to take up three or four days. Is there anyplace in the countryside to stay on the way?

We want to be back in Stockholm later on Thursday the 30th of July.

We then will be going to an island in the archipelago around Stockholm.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

this is our first trip to this part of the world :)

I can strongly recommend Soderkoping. http://www.soderkoping.se/ (If you press english to the left of the page you'll find a photogallery of söderköping) or www.ostergotland.info/default.aspx?m=26086

It's a small detour but it's really worth it. Söderköping is a beautiful little town next to Göta kanal.

Go there on your first day of travel, stay overnight and continue to Gothenburg the next day. Tickets can easily be bought att www.sj.se.

In Gothenburg, try to visit restaurant Räkan, www.rakan.se, for a great seafood experience.

thanks for the info....i started looking into soderkoping and it looks really nice, and there seems to be golf in the area which my son would like to do. i hope that we might be able to stay in a bed and breakfast or a small hotel.

Also in gothenburg, do you know any hotels??

A good reasonably priced hotel is City Hotel. http://www.cityhotelgbg.se/

It may be a little dated and some of the rooms share WC/Shower in the hallway. But with WC/Shower in your own room it's OK. And the location is perfect. Just next to the main street Avenyn.
