Staying at a Beach house

We are renting a Beach House on the Bay of Plenty and want to hike and see the areas in the vicinity. Of course we will kayak and walk along the beach. I will rent a car so we can sight see and any fishing advice ie surf casting or lake or river fly fishing would be great. Any things we should do or see will be appreciated. Cheers

Do you have any ideas for a particular town ( you have posted this in the Rotorua forum & Rotorua is inland so doesn't have a sea beach!)

IMO Mt Maunganui is a lovely spot. You have both the surf beach and the harbour so you can kayak as well as surf. You can walk "around-the-Mount" or climb to the top. There are hot salt water pools too.

If you want to do something quite different I would recommend a tour of White Island (an active marine volcano) you can cruise out to and walk around http://www.whiteisland.co.nz/.

If you are staying in Rotorua there is plenty to do in terms of geo-thermal activity (gysers, mud pools etc). As well as local Maori Culture experiences. For a relaxing day I'd highly recommend the Polynesia Spa http://www.polynesianspa.co.nz/ :)
