Olympia is inland and is not a port.

Most cruises dock at Katakolo, about 30 km east of Olympia.

In Katakolo there are some restaurants at the dock and some small shops in the streets leading to the port. There is also a small supermarket. Not much for shopping here.

Thanks Chinagazer! Do you have any idea what a taxi would cost to/from Olympia? I don't wwant to take a tour because i dont want to spend a long time there. Is there good shopping anywhere? Will I have to pre arrange a taxi for the return trip or should taxis be readily available at Olympia back to port? I appreciate your advice!

Olympia has a nice main street that makes for some good shopping. Of course it's not a Fifth Avenue or Rodeo Drive, but there are plenty of souvenir shops that sell the typical tourist T-shirts, plaster and bronze replicas of ancient vases and statues etc., but there are also some better shops that sell better quality souvenirs.

There is no need to book your taxi beforehand to return to Katakolon. You will find taxis readily available on main street in Olympia (unless it is a Sunday afternoon when taxi might be hard to find).

To give you an idea about taxi prices: we took a taxi from Tripoli to Nafplio which is 56 km and paid 30 euro.

Chinagazer and other experts: What do you think organized tour of olympia or do it on our own. If we take a taxi to Olympia could we do a walk through on our own, do some shopping in Olympia on foot and then catch a taxi back to port? Do you think we will miss out by not having a guide or is the independent approach a good option? Thanks for your advice.
