Ferries

Does anyone know how many ferries per week usually depart Thessaloniki for Limnos, Chios or Lesvos during the summer months please? At the moment GTP is only showing one ferry on a Sunday but obviously this is the winter schedule. Just wondering what the frequency is like before I book flights. thanks

Thessaloniki roughly 2 per week in summer, it's not a main port for the islands. Flights are about 3 times a week Thessaloniki > Limnos > Mytilini > Rhodes.

The main port is Kavala for Limnos about 4 per week, Chios about 2 per week.

thanks Retired Hippy. I've managed to find some cheap flights to Kos and return from Lesvos instead. I know the ferry system in the Dodecanese quite well and know that there will be more choice of ferries and destinations. Still fancy seeing Thessaloniki one day though, looks an interesting place. thanks again.

Hey and welcome arandas3:-) Thessaloniki is indeed a fantastic City.. well worth the trip and would allot at least a night or 2 to explore it;-) FWIW, it's a long ferry ride even from Lesbos.. would definitely consider flying for a shorter visit! Happy planning.. Happy New Year.. and enJOY!

Yes it would be better to plan your trip by plane. Summer ferry schedules are not lasting long and are few per week. Each year you will have to wait well into june for schedules to be announced.

B y the way, in these days, Thessaloniki is very lively

A happy new year to all travellers, and specially those travelling to Thessaloniki and the surrounding Macedonia area.

We are planning a trip from Piraeus to Thessaloniki by car. Once there we need to get to Istanbul to catch a cruise. Would it be possible to catch a ferry to Istanbul or bus. Will have luggage to carry and have some reservations about a bus trip. Rental car could be dropped off at airport if we fly. Has anyone tried a bus trip to Istanbul? Are there private services that would drive a group to Istanbul? Would appreciate any suggestions and advise. We will be there the middle of May.

Hey and welcome Karen W:-) Suggest to start a new post here for better exposure;-) I do believe the train between Athens and Thessaloniki is running.. there's even an express;-) If you're driving, it's a beautiful run;-) There are no ferries between Salonika and Istanbul.. there is indeed a bus.. there was also a train that overnighted.. or ran by day.. but not sure if this is still operating! Again, best to re-post in dedicated Thessaloniki Forum here.. just click the 'Ask a question' blue link on top, left hand side here right above original poster's question.. easier for those in the know to 'find' you and help out with some detailed info;-) Mid-May is a fabulous time.. Happy planning.. and EnjOY!
