 toilet paper

My husband and myself were thinking of spending a holiday in San Stefanos on Corfu in September. Are there any hotels there, where you can dispose of toilet tissue down the toilet,or must it always be put in a basket at the side of the toilet? My holiday depends on your answers.

Your holiday depends on how you dispose of toilet paper?!!

Do yourself a favour. Go to the Costa del Sol instead.

You seem to be online at the minute.

I have been to Costa Blanca,Costa Brave and Costa Del Sol.I have also been to France,Germany,Italy,Belgium,Hong Kong,Singapore and Australia.I have never in any of these countries had to put used toilet tissue in a basket. My husband is the one who wouldn't go somewhere where he had to do that.

I think your comment was uncalled for.

OK, let me say this to you again (in more words).

In Greece (and a few other countries around the world) you have to put used toilet paper in a special bin. You can't dispose of it down the toilet. If this is a problem for you, you need to choose another destination for your holiday. Costa del Sol is just one example. Any other destination in Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and most of the rest of Europe will also be OK.

I hope this helps.

I have never heard of this practice in any other country in the world. My husband has also been to America,Japan,Thailand and New Zealand,so we can claim to be fairly well travelled. All I want to know is,are there any hotels where we can flush away the toilet tissue???

We had chosen San Stefanos because my daughter said it was beautiful.

Destination Expert   What's this?
for Cephalonia, Rhodes, Ithaca, Crete, Kos, Polperro

We've travelled to many Greek islands and it's the same wherever you go. The Greek plumbing system cannot cope with paper. Whenever we go, we take a supply of scented nappy sacks and place the paper in those, tie the ends in a knot before placing in the bin. No mess, no odour, no nothing and I'm certain the maids appreciate it.

Any accommodation worth it's salt will empty the bins every day and it's never proved to be a reason for us not to go to Greece. You accept it and get on with it.

It's not the quality of the accommodation that determines what you do with used toilet paper, it's the same all over the country. The reason is that a long time ago someone (I believe the English!) designed the disposal pipes too small, which means that if you flush the paper in the toilet bowl it causes blockages.

Whenever and wherever I've stayed in Greece, even in the cheapest accommodation (and I have stayed in some very cheap places) the bins are emptied daily, and in more upmarket accommodation (i.e. hotels) you get bins with lids (like Brabantia bins) so there's no odour.

Millions of tourists every year cope with this arangement, it really is no big deal. But, like I said before, if you feel you can't, there's no point stomping your foot and expect a whole country to change - just choose another destination for your holiday. God knows there are plenty of other places in the world that are worth visiting.

Tinsie

I have posted on several sites on Tripadvisor and feel like I have made a few friends, but I have never had such rude answers as I have had from you.

I am NOT stomping my feet, nor do I expect a country to change their sewage system for me.I asked a question which many people might ask(if they know that's what they do with toilet tissue)and expected a civil answer. As you have already seen ,I have been to several places in the world, and this time I want to visit Greece.

Get over it! Just accept that this is what happens in Greece. As Tinsie says, thousands of other tourists from all over the world cope every year. As they say 'when in Rome.........'

Get over what??

I have never been to Greece before.I have never been in a situation where I put used toilet roll in a bucket.I asked a simple question, and made a tongue in cheeck comment about "my holiday might depend on it".If that's what I have to do then I will do it.What I don't need are comments like"get over it",or stomping my foot".I have used the forums for Australia,Hong Kong,SIngapore,Spaiin and France and never came across such bad manners before.I have only ever encountered friendliness.

This is my last words on the subject.
