Santorini in October and ferry from Athens

We propose to arrive in Athens around 11th Oct 2013 and after spending two days in Athens, we will like to travel to Santorini for 2-3 days.

Is mid October good time for Santorini?

Secondly, there is some confusion about fast ferries and the requirement that only same gender passengers can share a cabin. I will be with my wife and how do we sort this out.

Will someone advise.

the same gender rule applies only for strangers, for obvious reasons..you will have no problem having a cabin with your wiife..there are lots of threads in santorini forum about mid october..the weather can vary from sunshine to wind/rain ,many restaurants -shops will have closed, but santorini is so beautiful you can still enjoy the amazing caldera view from oia, imerovigli, fira and firostefani villages

Gender separation only occurs in larger cabins where someone has booked only one of several beds. If the cabin you choose has more than 2 beds you'll have to pay for all of them. Some of the fast ferries don't have cabins. They're smaller and only have aircraft-style seating in economy and VIP areas. Ask yourself if you really need to spend the money on a cabin if your plan is to make the trip to Santorini during the day in a highspeed ferry, which only takes about 5 hours.

Most ferries from Athens (Piraeus) to Santorini sail during the day, so there is no need to book a cabin. Your choices around that period seem to be Superjet, which doesn't have cabins, and Blue Star Naxos, which does. Most people just book seats in economy or business class, where of course you can sit together. If you do want to book sleeping berths in a cabin you will have to book the entire cabin.

We have planned to arrive to santorini october 2 wich is a wednesday

On the net, we have found that only two ferries sail to santorini that day : a catamaran superjet and a ferry bluestar.

we think that we will take the blue star ferry even if the trip takes 3 hours longer

could you please tell me :

- do we have to book tickets in advance or can we have them that day in Piraeus before taking the ferry in the morning

- the departure of the ferry is 7h25 am. Should we be in the port a long time before the departure ?

- our hotel is in Athens - kolonaki . In order to be there in time, when do we have to leave the hotel?

Thank you very much

You can buy your tickets that morning before your departure. Be at the port an hour before departure so you have time to buy the tickets and find your ferry. A taxi takes about 30 minutes to reach the port from Kolonaki.

As an alternative you can buy your tickets in advance at the airport from the travel desk of Amphitrion Holidays in the Arrivals Hall between Exit/Entry Doors 2&3. Also, someone at your hotel can direct you to a nearby travel agency where you can buy your tickets.
