Athens to Santorini

We have a strong interest in Ancient Greek monuments, history and archeological attractions. We have decided to spend 6 days in Athens but will also like to enjoy a daytrip to Santorini with an overnight stay.

What options do we have in terms of getting to Santorini from Athens?

We will be traveling with two children aged, 6 and 8 years

Thank you for your help

Basically you have 3 options fastest first.

1. Fly (1 hr).

2. Hi-speed catamaran (sum only, 4 hrs).

3. Ferry ~9 hrs.

There are much nearer islands with ancient monuments such as Aegina, 45 mins on hydrofoil from Piraeus. In my view the slowest way (& the cheapest) to Santorini is the best, you get a brief look at other islands on the way and the ferry crosses the caldera to the port of Athinios. By going to Santorini you will eat into your time on the mainland, where there is of course loads of monuments, history, archeological sights/sites.

Retired Hippy ( !!! ) has a point on it.

Getting in Santorini by ferry ( but not a catamaran ) is an unforgettable experience.

Perhaps you can sail in by ferry and leave by plane. That means you leave early morning fro Santorini and return next day with an evening or early night flight.

Igf you think that children will be getting bored at ship ( higly unlikable if you choose a good ferry ) then just take an early morning flight to Santorini.

If you book early enough your flight with Aegean it is possible to have a lower price. Programmes like this ( the earliest, the cheapest, as long as 19 days before ) come out oftenly, now and then.

Thank you for your help. We will try and schedule to sail by ferry and return by plane, providing that we can arrange to leave early morning from Santorini and return next day with an early night flight.

Make sure to book the flight using either Olympic of Aegean airlines. If you book using Orbitz of Expedia, or one of those websites, you will be paying 2x as much! I found out the hard way!
