Young couple - Where to stay in Mykonos?

Hi,

Any advice would be greatly appreciated on where to stay in Mykonos this summer! We are planning on going to Mykonos for 10 days at the begining of June.

We are 21 and 23, looking for a 4 star hotel with a budget of around £750 each including flights. We would like to be near a beach, would like the hotel to be fairly big with a nice pool.

Would appreciate any general details on Mykonos as the travel agent was very unhelpful. Where are most of the good restaurants located? Where gets busiest at night? We are looking for a fairly lively night life - bars not clubs but with a lively holiday feel.

Do any beaches do water sports?

Thanks

Think we may have to change our budget seems impossible to find anywhere in the town under 150 pounds!

As you're no doubt discovering, Mykonos can be an expensive island to visit, especially if you want to travel in 4-star comfort.

Some answers to your questions:

Location of good restaurants: The island has over 300 restaurants, and the vast majority are located in or close to Mykonos Town. There also are restaurants and tavernas at most major beaches. There are very good restaurants in town, and there are very good restaurants at beaches. The restaurants ranked #1, 2, 9 and 12 for Mykonos here on TripAdvisor are all situated at Platis Gialos beach.

Where gets busiest at night? Mykonos Town, especially early June. There could be some evening beach party activity at Paradise beach, but at Platis Gialos, Ornos and other beach areas with more than one restaurant, the evening/night scene is basically limited to dining with people also enjoying cocktails at some beachside bars. But in Town is really where the action is.

Mykonos Town has dozens of bars, many of which are smaller-sized venues and not huge clubs that cram thousands of people in to watch world-famous DJs spin (two such clubs are at Paradise beach).

Water sports are available at several beaches, including Platis Gialos, Kalo Livadi and Kalafatis.

Is 150 pounds your budget for nightly accommodations? That's about €182 (Greece is on the Euro, so when seeking advice about prices there it's best to use the local currency). Some hotels you could consider include:

In/close to Mykonos Town: Andronikos, Porto Mykonos, Tharroe of Mykonos, and Hermes.

Many places have special discount offers or packages on their websites so check for those, especially since you're planning to go for 10 days.

Note that Mykonos doesn't have "big" hotels; they're not huge sprawling resorts like you might find at some places, like on Rhodes and Crete, for instance.

Could you reccomend another greek island that offers all of what we have talked about (livley holiday feel nightlife, beaches, water sports etc) but for slightly cheaper?

If you want your money to go farther than it will on Mykonos, consider Naxos. Accommodation and food there is significantly cheaper than on Mykonos, and the island itself has much, much more to offer.

A post I recently wrote about Naxos on my travel blog will give you lots of information about that island: www.tinyurl.com/WhyVisitNaxos

From Naxos you can take daytrips to a number of other islands, including Mykonos (more details in that blog post), so you would still be able to get a look at Mykonos if you wanted.

I think Ios would be a good fit for you, lively and young enough, busy enough in June (at least around the 21st)

'4 star' for £100 or less, cheaper day to day than Mykonos...look it up and come back to the forum for more answers
