Family Vacation

We will be traveling to Mykonos for 1 week in July with our 2 children (6 and 9), what are the best beaches to visit with them and what day trips are a must....We like adventure and like trying and experiencing new places :)

The main family beaches are Platis Gialos, Ornos and Agios Stefanos. I've also heard good feedback about Kalafatis and Kalo Livadi from people who took their young children to those beaches.

Easiest day trip is to Delos island to see the historic ruins and archaeological museum. In July, day trips should be possible to nearby Tinos island.

There are several scuba diving centres, horseback riding, island jeep tours, and Mykonos beach boat tours and sunset boat tours, in case any of those are the types of adventure you enjoy. To get more details, check with any of the ferry ticket/travel agencies in Mykonos Town when you get to the island.

Paranga beach is wonderful but keep at the Eastern side - this is where all the children and families are, the western end tends to be more "grown up" with occasional nudists. This tends to be the rule on most of the beaches including Elia, Kalo Livadi, Paridise, etc. Try Lunch in Ano Mera - in the square at the western end is a taverna where all the food is on display inside, with a grill for meats - this makes the meal a bit more fun. It is the oldest one on the square with large trees overhanging the outside eating area. The monastry is just opposite, so your kids may catch sight of the occassional Greek Orthadox monk. There is a beach bar at Panormous in the north, all under camoflague netting. This in the past has had an assortment of animals running around (including a couple of year ago a pig). a bit different. The beach has no sub-beds, but great snorkelling as you go ot a bit. Agios Stefanos is a small beach which gets crowded - it is popular with families, but I suspect you may find it a bit disappointing.

I would suggest that you stick with Ornos and Platis Gialos. Donnyb's information is accurate.

Horse riding is at Maou on way to Panormous beach (the web site has pictures of the beach). Check out Horseland.gr

the trek to Fokos beach and tavern would be fab - the tavern is great for authetic food off the beaten track. For water sports at Kalafati beach, check out mykonos-diving.com and mykonoswatersports.com
