Hi,

We have just booked a holiday at the Petra Mare Hotel, in Lerapetra but I am now extremely worried about the beach, after seeing some pictures of grey/black sand, and also after reading that it is mainly shingle beaches.

I am rethinking my holiday, as this as kind of putting me off!

Has anyone been and been extremely desappointed about the beaches?

Many thanks for your help

Nadia

first of all the place is called Ierapetra and it is mist sunny city in Europe. The beaches here with pebbles, well yes if you bring them, than you can make them !!!!!!! The beaches on the south of Crete are the best of the island, some part might have pebbles, but 90 % is sandy, grey , true but clean. Crete holds the record of blue flag beaches, a award from the E.U. Go to Makrigialos and Kalo Nero. The beaches from Mirthos outside the village are also nice. No if you go for a beach holliday to Crete, than the the south is the place to be.

nadia,

you do not have to worry at all. Ierapetra and its surroundings Koutsounari, Myrtos etc, have lovely blue flag beaches. Waters are clear blue and after all there is Chrissi island where you can enjoy the libyan coast sundy beaches

Dont know if you have gone yet, but just a quick reply. We did not like Ierapetra, we stayed to have a drink and ice cream then moved on. The beach was dirty and had pebbles like Brighton. Very disappointing as we were so hot, temp about 35 deg. and needed a swim. Not our kind of favourite beach, so would not go back there I am afraid. Hope it has changed by the time you get there.

Hi Nadia,

I hope this puts your mind at rest. We stayed at the Petra Mare last year and are actually returning this year because it was such a great place to stay. Yes the beach is grey but I wouldn't really describe it as shingle, more like coarse sand. You access the beach via steps from the hotel pool area, and there are taps with a hosepipe attached at the bottom of the steps for you to rinse off any excess "sand". We spent a couple of days on the beach during our stay, but noticed other families with younger children spending much of the day there buckets and spades etc.

If you want turquoise waters and a real soft white sandy beach might I suggest a day trip to Chrissy Island. Its paradise - a real chill-out day out.

Hope this helps and you enjoy your stay as much as we did.

Trisha
