Have to agree that the Hope has a greek mezi style of food, and this can't be rushed...{Palio is just down the hill from the Hope, on the Despina side of Mavrikiano. It's pretty much the same - don't go if you have a timetable to meet! The service isn't slow, but all the food is made to order and Maria, Marinos and their nephew will make you some stunning dishes!

Having lived here for a while, I suppose we are getting into the Cretan way of life - meals take hours not minutes, as you just sit, talk, laugh and watch the world go by. good company, great views and a happy smile are the order of the day in Elounda...

Agree wholeheartedly with you Lynne,it's all about sitting and chatting while you enjoy a leisurely meal,we don't want to rush our food,it's all part of the Greek way of life which suits us,if service is on the slow side,so what, doesn't bother us,we're in no hurry...If you're on a day trip with limited time that's different....otherwise just 'go with the flow'and relax

Our visit last night was definitely a success. It was just simple Greek taverna food done well. Good quality and cheap too - very good value. Ok, so we didn't go overboard this time, but bread, Ives and the other bubbly bits, baked feta, potatoes with tomato and a couple of pork souvlaki, a beer and a gin and tonic came to a grand total of 17 euros. As with most places, we got a free sweet at the end. We did have Greek coffees too but weren't 't charged for those as it took a while for them to come (we didn't complain though - we were happy sitting).

Agree that one of the joys of eating out here is having a slow, leisurely meal but I have to say that apart from the coffees, the service we had was really very swift. All but one of our dishes came almost straight away and the other one came as soon as we'd made room on the table.

We'll definitely be back. Fancy trying the new-ish place (beginning with an A but can't remember the name) near the Olive Grove apartments too. Fairly sure that wasn't there a year ago, so want to try it.

O thank goodness someone can do the spelling! for some reaason the name of that place just won't stick in my head!! It's been open about 2 seasons now - we've eaten there a couple of times and it's good stuff. Bear in mind this IS a mezi house - if you don't order salad/veg you won't get any! You get exactly what it says, no frills, no extras - be aware and try something from the BBQ if it's going...scrummy!!

Isn't it interesting how different people have different experiences, on our last of many visits to Elounda the only taverna we were disappointed with was the Vachus, it didn't help that tere were very few customers in there, all the others were heaving with customers, and all the waiters stood around staring at the few customers, eager to do something.

It must have just been one of those nights, although the food didn't impress us either!!

Still no problem, as there are so many more to choose from

Just back. And visited The Hope again.

Were we impressed. You bet. Amelia served us and as usual was charming and chatty.

Just a pit stop. So only the Fix. And Free Meze But just a gorgeous little place.

Next evening we intended to go in again and stay the evening but Palio's got a grip of us as we walked up from the Despina end....

Everything that has been said about great Cetan evenings is encapsulated here...

No rush... Just a procession of fantastic tasty dishes.... Fantastic hospitally and a free arial display from the local Bats :)

Just be carefull though ... If you drink the Raki.. That arrives with a delicious free sweet... Then another bottle arrives :)

Fabulous night... And thanks to Lynn for the heads up. Xx

We then had to get into the village ( World Cup Germany vs Brazil).

But passed the Hope...... It was packed !

If you are staying towards Plaka... Kavos Bay, Elounda Blu, Tasmania way...

You could not go wrong with the trio of Despinas, Palio's and The Hope....

Well worth the walk.... All three with their own special "Feel". :)

Enjoy.
