4 person rooms in Athens

I contacted a 5 star hotel near the Acropolis. We are 2 adults and 2 kids, 15(girl) and 9(son). This hotel will not let us stay in a double bed room and I certainly cannot afford two rooms per night.

We do this in the US all the time. If we don't complain, why won't they let us stay? Is there a way around this problem?

I suppose they feel that as an expensive, exclusive, 5-star hotel they have a reputation to maintain and appearances to keep up.

Yes. Take two rooms in a three star hotel, or consider renting an apartment.

As far as I know no hotel in Europe will allow more people to stay in a room with no extra charge.

For example, most single rooms are essentially double or twin rooms, but its a different price when theres only one occupant and different when there are two.

The obvious choice for you would be to stay at a cheaper hotel and rent 2 double rooms to accommodate you all .

Hey and welcome OrlandoTrip12:-) Most hotel sites when asking how many pax, will have a drop down list for # of 'adults' and a seperate one for 'children' as well! Some offer children under a certain age the stay for free when sharing room with parents! Nonetheless, sounds like you should be looking for at least a triple room.. if not a quad.. no reason to split up and book 2 seperate rooms! You don't mention which 5 star property you're referring to.. there aren't that many in the central area near Akropolis.. but bear in mind, oftentimes, a 'double' is just that.. one double, usually queen bed in the room so no way to accommodate more.. triple/quad rooms usually have 2 double or queens beds which would then work for you;-)

Even here in the States, at least in NYC, there are laws/regulations in place for safety reasons where there is a max occupancy requirement depending on room choice.. a double oftentimes will only allow for 2 pax and if a child is involved, some will offer a extra bed.. sometimes at an added cost.. sometimes not.. but again, they must adhere to the laws and max occupancy restrictions! Don't know it works in Greece, but fwiw, lots of hotels are used to accommodating families.. never heard of having to split up due to accompaning children! Even the 5* properties have triples and quads.. would check the age restrictions on what makes for an 'adult'.. maybe an email inquiring?;-) Bottom line, absolutely no reason to split up.. a family of 4 is very common;-) Best.. and enJOY!

We are heading to Greece in a couple of weeks and have encountered this same issue with our family of four (2 parents and 2 children aged 12 and 14). The 2-double-beds room, in which a family of four can stay, that is common even in no frills motels in the US is just not so common in Europe. Also, some hotels count anyone over age 12 as an adult (and charge accordingly). In some places in Greece we found rooms that will allow a family of four, called either quad rooms or family rooms. I used booking.com to find some; the site allows you to search for hotel rooms that would accommodate 4 people.

We are going to be in Athens 3 times during our travels, and here is what we ended up doing, in case any of the info is useful:

3 nights at the Intercontinental -- "balcony suite" allows 4 people (booked as part of a tour)

2 nights at the Omiros (less fancy hotel in Plaka area; has quad rooms for 82 euros per night including breakfast)

1 night at the Arethusa (also less fancy but handy Syntagma Square location; booked 2 double rooms at 75 euros per night per room)

Take care,

Incredibly, at booking.com, they pretty much list every location near which you can search for a hotel other than the most famous one, Acropolis.
