Athens Forum: tours for the disabled

 tours for the disabled

Some friends of ours are going on a Greek Island cruise (on a mega ship) this summer. Although not elderly my friend is disabled and walks with a walker. All the ship's brochures say that their tours are really for the able bodied. Are there any tour companies, or private guides, who give special tours that she can enjoy and see the islands?

She is very fearful that all she will be able to do is stay on the ship and wait for her husband and daughter to return from sightseeing.

Thank you so much for your help.

I would certainly take a taxi tour, if not possible to go with the ship tour. Tell her not to be fearful of this. An arranged taxi tour will take her at least till Acropolis Hill feet. Other destinations too, accessible by car can be added, like the 1896 Olympic Panathinaikon Stadium, perhaps some of Plaka etc.

During recent Athens Olympics a small open air elevator has been installed in Acropolis to help people with severe disabilities to reach this great monument.

You can take an idea about this improvement at:

www.sath.org/index.html…

Accessing Acropolis is a 3 parts walk but a taxi can get her without any special permission near the tickets plateau. Elevators is a sensible walk from there.

As about Acropolis elevator, she is advised to make a phone arrangement prior day at +30 210 32 14 172 which is Acropolis museum phone number, while her visit will be a lot easier early at the day during 08:00 - 10:00 am.

Upon the phone request she may be asked, due to typical reasons, about her medical situation. Some simple words as: " i cannot walk and i use a walker" are enough :).

Taxi tours:

I usually don't advice on a taxi tour, since for most people, taking the subway and walk around is the best and most enjoyable choice ( no to mention the cost ). But this is a special request. So, these are all the links i know about taxi drivers here in Athens that would make a driving tour:

Don't hesitate to e-mail them for this special request.

Hope these help. Here for anything adittional :)

Thank you! Thank you!!! She will be so pleased that she will be able to do some things. I will print this out to give her.

Is the possibility of taxi tours, or personal tours also available in the Greek Islands as well? I realize that the walks are uneven, so again rolling along is a problem, but are these tours available?

Again, thank you so much for your help.

Carol - You may want to visit http://www.kostasz.org - the organization's founder is an AMAZING Greek American who is an expert of everything to do with Athens and accessibility. He was very involved in making Athens more accessible during the 2004 Olympic/Paraolympic Games, and he is also quite friendly and knowledgable. I think his site is being revamped write now, but there is a link and he may have some good suggestions for your friend. Your friend does not have to spend her time waiting on the ship while her family is out exploring!

As about taxi tours in the islands, i suppose they do exist, depending the island. Athens links have also usually links for other islands too.

One possible exception is Santorini, where disembarkation is being done in ships boats in the vast majority of the ships, followed by a funicular ride to the top of the cliff. She will have substantial difficulties to do the visit there, but hey: views from the decks will compensate a little. But in all other destinations it may work.

I cannot tell you how much this information means to my friend Lynn. When I called her yesterday to tell her that I had posted this topic for her she cried...that I had access to this site (she can't use a computer yet...I'll get her online somehow) and that there are good people out there who will help.

I will help her contact all these people. I know that when she surprises her husband and daughter with this information that she too can enjoy Greece, possibly with more personalized tours....I suspect that she will want to go keep travelling.

Again, thank you. You have done a wonderful thing.
