Hi, you are booked into a great hotel, close to the shopping centre Santa Catarina. Call 00351 96618332 if you would like my help with anything. You will also have a chance to walk around the historical parts of the city, although it is very hilly. Porto is a cultural centre, and there is a lot of history to see. The port wine caves are well worth a vist on the Gaia side of the river. A day cruise up the river Douro, or a tour up the Douro Valley if you have time is a must. We have great restaurants, churches, gardens, etc, in Porto and a lot more to see in the region if you have time.

We were in that area in February: at least got as far north as Aveiro, which is worth a look. Enjoyed visiting Aveiro municipal museum in old convent (good collection of sacred art).

Highlights though were Buçaco (Mealhada exit from motorway or across country from Aveiro) and Coimbra university where you can visit old library and other buildings in university compound.

Buçaco is a forest near Luso with a former hunting palace converted into a hotel. Amazing pseudo-Manueline architecture, inspired by Batalha and Jeronimos. Beautiful gardens too.

We visited Peniche in the afternoon when fishing boats were coming in. Went out to the cape too. Stayed overnight at Obidos which is a really beautiful walled town and an absolute must.

If you've time I'd suggest you go down one day to sintra to visit the palaces. Pretty scenery en route too.

We also visited Acobaça monastery but felt it was a bit of a let-down after Batalha.

Thank you both for your advise, will definitely try to have a trip up the Douro and get down as far as obidos again, we were there last year and ate in a lovely traditional restaurant by the old, disbanded church - fabulous.

Hoping that we have just as an enjoyable time in the porto area- would love to find a nice apartment to buy between Porto & peniche.

Marioo thank you for your phone number, we will bring it with us and may well call on you for advice

Thanks again

Hello Bob,

I assume you mean you have arranged a hired car from the airport?

If you need any help / advise during your break, please call peter.evens@netcabo.pt or 00351966618332.

Traffic should not be a major problem to you, and i suggest you follow carefully the following directions as supplied by the Vile Gale Hotel:-

Leave the airport and follow the signposts to IC 1 – Porto. After entering IC 1 (dual carriageway) drive straight on until you find the VCI – Freixo exit. Enter VCI (internal circular road) and take the Antas exit. Continue straight on through the first traffic lights and passing a Shell service station. Pass the McDonalds restaurant on your left and continue along the same road until you arrive at a garden (Praça Dr. Francisco Sá Carneiro / Praça Velasquez). At the traffic lights on your right take the right turning. Drive down Carlos Malheiro Dias Street and turn left at the first traffic lights. Drive down to the end of this street (Rua de Santos Pousada). Turn left before you reach the last traffic lights and go round the garden (Campo 24 de Agosto) on your left. Follow this street until you find an illuminated sign on your left indicating the entrance to your hotel.

Weather has been great recently but today we have had a lot of thunder storms and the rain looks to be here for a week.

Sorry !
