One way river cruises from Porto to Pinhao?

We will be in Porto in mid-June and are considering a cruise up the Douro to Pinhao. We would like to leave the boat and stay in Pinhao for a night or two. Is it possible to take a river cruise just one way with our luggage? Most of the cruises I have read about are either day tourist trips with train/bus included back to Porto or an overnight cruise, which doesn't seem to allow for time to wander in the towns and areas. Suggestions?

Yes, the options include returning to Porto. The only option I see here is you buy the train ticket and forget about the cruise. This will give you freedom and still scenic views. To make it up, do a small "7 bridge cruise" at Porto.

Good advice. I also saw someone mention a short boat tour from Pinhao up the Douro for a bit so that might make the best combination for us. Thanks!

Hi, perhaps you can help me too.

I've read many topics here about Douro Valley trips and I am still confused.

I'd like to see Douro Valley on the cheap (well, I just don't have much money).

Can I take a train to Pinhao (from S. Bento railway station) and then a train back from Pinhao? And then walk around on my own. I don't drive. Or perhaps without a car and boat trip it's just not worth doing and I should forget it and concentrate on Porto (I'll be doing a trip from Porto).

If I still will be able to see beautiful views on my own, would it be better to make it two days trip?

I've read from posters who were dissapointed by the boat trip, which makes me more reluctant to spend money on it.

If anyone knows where to look up approx. price of train to Pinhao it would be cool . Can I buy it online or do I have to buy it in Porto?

You can pick a train to Pinhão from Porto-S. Bento or from Porto-Campanhã. All the trains stop at Campanhã but not all, at S. Bento. Take a look at the timetables:

The price is no more than 11€ one way

Você não pode comprar o bilhete online. This is only for alfa and intercity trains.

Thank you. Obrigado!

After looking at it for some time, do I understand it right that from PC I can take a train to Regua and then go from Regua to Pinhao?

I don't think it says when last train from Pinhao to Porto goes, anyone knows (approximately). Anyone has an opinion if that's a worthy trip, because right now I think that's what I'll do - a day trip on train back and forth. A difference in price is significant compared to tour or staying overnight.

Second question: How early can I buy tickets in Portugal, or is there no need to worry that they will be all sold out? What I mean is, do I need to go to train station as soon as I get to Porto and buy tickets for my date, or do I just buy them the day of a trip?

Oh my God!!!

I just realized, that the last answer i gave was half Portuguese and half in English. I think i need a break :)

But i think you understood that is not possible to buy tickets online for suburbans, regionals and inter regional trains. Buy them the day of travel. No problem...

Porto-Pinhão: If you take the 07:30 train, you don't have to change trains in Régua, but is true that some trains include a change there.

Last train from Pinhão departs at 20:01. This train includes two changes. One in Régua and another in Caíde. (check page 2)

Thank you very much, and no problem, I speak Spanish and know few portuguese words.

Now it's mostly clear, I think I'll do exactly that trip.

Look around the city and take a small boat trip from Pinhao and back, which I just found out exists and is pretty cheap.

Thanks!

The first time we went into the Douro valley we did exactly this. A train to Pinhao and then a boat trip. Pinhao is lovely and easy to walk around. For the boat, once you leave the pretty tiled railway station, turn left and follow the sign 'praia' (beach). That's where the boat is. Go there first to not miss the trip. When you come back there are some places along the water where you can eat/drink.

The first part of the train journey is not very interesting but once the train runs along the Douro river it's beautiful. We did regret to have only gone to Pinhao and came back for another trip, all the way to Pocinho. The scenery got even better. There are a few Youtube's on this journey.

Otherwise, if you are done in Pinhao, go back to Regua and spend some time there before you continue going back to Porto.

I am also planning a Douro Valley trip in mid May. As suggested by Sophia (many thanks :-) the plan is to take train from Porto to Mosteiro (stay overnight) and take the train from Mosteiro to Regua (have a look there) and take the train to Pinhao. My plan is to take the train back from Pinhao to Porto.

After reading this boat trip, I would like to get your advice on the boat trip from Pinhao to Porto, campared with the train trip?

Thanks a lot!!
