Resturants around The Forum Funchal Madeira

Hi, We are staying at Pestana Grand Hotel which is near the Forum, can anyone please tell us of good restaurants nearby on foot, we do like good food, but the days of eating A La Carte and expensive have passed due to age!

just across the road is Real Canoa, gets good reviews here. also at the Commercial centre at the bottom of the Hotel is a supermarket and a few restaurants. If you go across to the steps leading down from the Commercial centre towards the beach is a great blue painted fish restaurant Doco do Cavicas. The Forum has a food floor at the top and there are a lot of restaurants around the Forum, lots to chose from.

Try Rubi restaurant, go up the road just to the right of Forum shopping and its just over the cross roads on the left hand side. The food is very good, many locals eat there. He does a plate of the day for about 6 euros with a drink if you want some lunch. The menu is good and the prices are very reasonable. The owner, Carlos, is very friendly, him and his wife run it. They make the best bacon and egg sandwich on the island, great for breakfast or brunch....

Thank you for information - we know Madeira well been going for 12 years, we usually around Cliff Bay area but going to explore other hotels on the islands and we do like to eat where the locals eat and the Portuguese do love their food, certainly will try the restaurants you recommend. Thanksxx

To Eat more local it is better to try to get out of Funchal, and into the country, good food cheaper prices, and a whole new experience.

We can confirm what Tobi says. We've eaten at Rubi's and when the bill came we asked if they'd under charged us as we couldn't believe how cheap it was.The food was excellent. We'll be back there this year.

Thanks for the information re restaurants, sounds as thought we have some nice eating places - is the hill up to the Forum steep or a long less hilly incline, I am comparing this to the Monumental Lido a little way along and the hill there to the Pestana Palm and Lido area is a real killer on bad days! If the hill that steep any good Car hire places can anyone recommend. Thanks for all for you comments.

The Hill at the side of the Forum is a little steep, but not as much as the one at the Lido from the Palms Palace.

Do you really know too much about Portugese food? The food is good and normal, whatever you mean by that comment!! The UK is where you will find 'decent' English food, not abroad...Food is very good here with lots of fresh fish and meat (pork, beef, lamb and chicken) It is not highly spiced and usually served with fresh fruit or vegatables. Some of it is not too far removed from the English style of food. Beef is often served on skewers and cooked to your liking, chicken fillets are often served and fish is beautiful, often served with banana or other fruit.

There are several places which offer English style food but not on the scale which you find in the Canaries or Costas. Breakfast in Hotels is usually buffet style with loads of choice. There is a very good restaurant above the Pingo Doce in the Lido area which serves excellant fish and chips on Fridays. There are other restairants who serve English food, Moynahans, Prince Albert, X tonel also to name a few, but I seriously do not think you will have a problem wit the Portugese cuisine here in Madeira.
