On Good Friday 29 March I leave a cruise ship at the port about 0800 and fly to London at 2020. Will hire a car to see some of the island and hope to pick it up in town and drop off at airport rather than pickup and drop off at airport. Finding it difficult to find out whether can pick up in town with any firms that day and whether there will be any special events that day. Can anyone help?
Why not have a car delivered to the harbour so that you can drive straight away. Good Friday is an important religious festival, being as Catholic Country and also a public holiday, so local transport will be limited as will shops and other services will be affected. To pick up a car at the airport will be costly as the trip there from the harbour by taxi will cost around €25. A good alternative would be to hire a taxi and it's driver for the day and you will have the trip tailored by the driver so that you see the best of what Madeira has to offer.
I agree with Flowercity's latter suggestion of hiring a taxi for the day .They would pick you up from the port and drop you off at the Airport at the end of the day .
thanks for the ideas and info. had not thought about hiring a taxi for the day and see that there several providers. might be a good option to avoid driving on narrow unfamiliar roads on a public holiday. also looks like some car hire firms in Funchal might be open bank holidays eg Sixt.
any info about public events in Madeira on Good Friday?
Nothing too much in the way of public events except Church Services for Easter Friday
