Quiet vacation base outside but near Lisbon?

After a pleasant week near Naples in Italy this year we are now contemplating to do something similar in the fall of 2014. We would really like to visit Lisbon, but do not like to stay in big cities.

We prefer to be based in a relatively quiet, friendly small town to relax and soak in some sun, from where we can make day trips into the City or other area attractions. We prefer public transportation over renting a car. One to 1.5 hrs on a bus/tram/train/ferry each way would not be an issue.

We prefer small towns which may be somewhat touristy, but which have kept some of their authentic flavor. With small restaurants and sidewalk cafes. Walkable. Preferably a decent beach. We are not into night life. Likely would rent a private place or stay in a smaller local hotel with some character.

When browsing Google Earth I noticed the villages of Sesimbra to the south and Ericeire to the north, each about 30/40 km away from Lisbon. Can anyone tell us which of these would better suit our preferences as described above? Or can anyone recommend any other towns near Lisbon?

Thanks.

Again, thank you all so much for the variety of responses. What did I ever do without TA.

Billymoon, your suggestions look very much in line with what we are looking for. I checked out Almocageme and saw there are wonderful places to rent there. Even an old windmill (Airbnb) And we could walk to Adrega Beach (and back uphill). btw: if you live in Portland Oregon, we stayed there in a very nice b&b last Christmas. Great City. Yes we do like cities occasionally. Especially if there is much history, which certainly makes Lisbon qualify.

But Novakc also makes a point. We relate entirely to your position. We live in a small town (pop. 4500) 125km east of Vancouver in the mountains. The nearest town is about 25km away. There is no public transportation and we are 100% dependent on our cars. We therefore see using trains and buses not as a bother, but rather as an addition to our travel experience. We bussed a lot in Mexico. Used the train, ferry and bus extensively in Italy, Iceland and Holland, and loved it. And guess what, we were in Massa Lubrense a few weeks ago. We stayed in a small town called Vico Equense, 10min north (by train) of Sorrento. From there we visited Sorrento, the Amalfi Coast, Naples and Capri, the ultimate tourist trip. So you see we are not averse to popular places. We especially did love Naples. But it is so nice to wake up in the morning without traffic noise and retreat in the evening to a quiet town to relax over a meal and a drink in a local restaurant.

Another thing to know is that we make our European trips in combination with visiting our relatives in the Netherlands. In the three weeks there we fly away for a week to 10 days to get a break and do some real vacationing.

But back to the topic: In this case, based on the variety of suggestions, we begin to lean towards staying a few days in Lisbon itself and then spend the rest of the time in a quiet rural spot, accessible by public transport. On that note: Any further suggestions for a small intimate hotel or b&b in the old part of Lisbon are more than welcome.

Try the Solar do Castelo in Lisbon - 16 rooms, set within the castle grounds, really serene environment. We stayed there for 3 nights about 5 years ago, we got a great deal by shopping around. The peacocks pop over from the castle and there is a lovely honesty bar in the very comfortable lounge. It's very quiet up by the castle, no traffic, and if you are driving they have a secure car park compound so you don't have to worry about finding somewhere. You won't need a car once in the city though.

Also there is a beautiful restaurant in Colares in the square there, Colares Velho. The interior is worth seeing and it's on your route in to Sintra from Almocageme. We stopped there once at noon, had fantastic chocolate torte.

Enjoy your trip!

My vote is for Sesimbra. The area is beautiful, close to a national park with massive deserted beaches along the south western side of the Setubal Penisualr - Lago de Albeferia is great area close by. best to have a rental car but there are direct buses (40 minutes) from Lisbon.

Sesimbra is perfect, with beach, beautiful small city with a lots of small restaurants and bars, and by bus it's like 45 minutes from Lisbon. Strongly recommend it
