Hey, the best way to get from Seville to Lisbon is by bus or car, there is no train between the both cities, just from madrid. You have to take a bus first from Seville to the Algarve in the south of Portugal and then take another bus from there to Lisbon. It will take more or less 5 to 6 hours. You can always rent a car in Seville, by car is muck quicker, 4 hours. between the both cities is always highways.
Enjoy
The bus or train from Lisbon to Faro will take about 4 hours.
Trains leave Lisbon at 8:21am, 1:21, 5:21 and 7:21pm you need to reserve a seat but that shouldn't be a problem. Times and fares at www.cp.pt
Train fare is only about €18 one way even without a Eurailpass.
Long-distance buses cost €16 and take about the same length of time - www.rede-expressos.pt for details but in Portuguese only
Going by train via Madrid involves an overnight journey as there is only ONE train a day between the two cities. You cannot get a local Portuguese train to the border and then a Spanish train since the lines on the Spanish side lost their local trains some years ago.
There are only TWO buses a day between Faro and Seville leaving at 8.20am and 3.35pm - I have put together the information for that leg of the journey on a personal webpage at
thomasallen.home.sapo.pt/travel/001.htm
It will cost you only about €17 for the four hours or so to Seville. Tickets should be bought in advance to ensure a seat - the buses don't seem particularly busy at the moment but might be more so in high summer.
So you could do the whole journey for around €35 or about 60 of your Australian Dollars.
You might consider stopping off in Faro for a night to break the journey given the limited options for the last bit.
Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately we have booked (and paid for) accommodation at both ends so can't really break the trip. We are going to have to try to work out the bus trip I think. The other alternative of a car might work , though having never driven in Europe I wonder how difficult it might be?
It is very easy to drive in Europe. Between Seville and Lisbon is always highways very well "legended" so you wouln´t have any problem. If you prefer you can always buy a good map of Spain and Portugal.
See this site: www.viamichelin.com. You can finf here the map rout between the both cities.
Enjoy Porugal
yes, but are there good deals for one way car rentals? within spain the price is great for a one day - one way travel. But as soon as you cross the international border the prices goes up by more than 10x!
I'm looking at 40 Euros to drive from Barcelona to Madrid, but 550 Euros from Lisbon to Sevilla.
any other ideas? thanks
I can recommend the bus from Seville to Lisbon. Very comfortable and a stopover for a meal broke up the travel. Only problem we encountered was in Seville when bus arrived late and was over booked. I couldnt understand all the Spanish but two people had to miss the bus and the driver didnt want to let the female partners of the last two guys trying to get on, to get off the bus. Mass confusion and angst. In the end one woman got off with her partner so that the other couple could travel together. They had to wait all day for next bus. Really badly organised so I suggest that if you are travelling in a group get at least half the group to jump on the bus as soon as possible and save seats while the others put luggage in.
thanks. we're 4 and will be there next week. All information is appreciated.
Just a short addition to cubsur's excellent explanation.
You can get a bus from Seville to Ayamonte, cross the river by boat and get a train from Vila Real Sta. Antonio to Faro and then Lisbon.
I am mobile at the moment but will try to post more detailed tomorrow. In the meantime see my previous posts on this.

Indeed you can go by bus, ferry and train but I have never met anyone who has!
Things is with only four trains a day Faro - Lisbon and not the best bus service in the world between Seville - Ayamonte and throw in a ferry that runs only about every 30 minutes, you will have to be pretty confident of your arrangements as there isn't much room for manoeuvre if anything goes awry!
Good luck.
