Estoril or Cascais?

Thinking of going to the Lisbon coast in May 09.

Would you recommend Cascais or Estoril....3 of us are going...we're looking for a nice relaxing break in a nice town with a good selection of restaurants and a nice beach. we also hope to be able to visit Lisbon pretty easily for shopping!

Do Cascais or Estoril provide the above.?

Thanks

Cascais seems to have what you are looking for, nice little town with plenty of cafes, restaurants and little shops and a traditional feel to the place with cobbled streets, tiled buidings etc. There is also a nice marina area with restaurants and bars. Estoril is a residential area and apart from the casino there is nothing to do there. A lovely promenade joins the two resorts and it is a pleasant walk between the two. We stay at the Pica Pau in Estoril (see reviews on this site)which I can thoroughly recommend and walk to Cascais along the prom and then get a taxi back (under 5 euros). There is a station at both Estoril and Cascais and the jopurney into Lisbon is approx 25 mins, is cheap and a great ride all along the coast. There is also a bus service from both resorts to Sintra, the world heritage site in the mountains with palaces and castle and traditional town to see. Look in the Lisbon forum as well for information on Cascais/Estoril. Hope this helps

we are staying in St. Pedro do Estoril. Is it right beside Estoril? Do you know if you can walk to Cascais from there?

how long a walk is it from Estoril to Cascais?

You are staying at the next stop on the railway in towards Lisbon from Estoril. I think the promenade goes that far, have not walked it in that direction! You will be easy walking distance from estoril itself and about 3kms from cascais, quite a long walk but flat and always things to look at and bars to stop for a drink! Alternatively you can just hop on a train to cascais very cheaply and look at the coastal scenery or take a taxi which are cheap and plentiful.

thanks for the info. Do you know anything about the town of St. Pedro do Estoril? we were told it has restaurants and stores etc too, but I imagine it is pretty small?

Sorry. no I don't know anything about that area but it is all built up from Lisbon to Cascais, they are all just suburbs of Lisbon and each area runs into the next. After Cascais you get into open countryside between settlements. I would imagine where you are there are the beachside restaurants and bars on the prom at the very least.

Hi

We are planning a trip to Portugal too, and are pondering between Cascais and Estoril. To be more specific, our hotel in Estoril would be Estoril Eden Hotel and in Cascais Riviera Hotel.

Which one would be better for :

- beach life ?

- restaurants ?

- visiting Lisboa ?

- airport connections ?

There would be 3 of us (2 adults and our 8 yrs old son).

And if you have any nice info about stuff to do in either places, please let me know.

Thanks in advance :)

Hi

Thanks for the reply.

The reason for hotel choice...well, it's an airline offer, they have very reasonably priced package including accom+flights for 2 adults + 1 child.

I think we will go for the Estoril Eden hotel.

Since our flight will land at 19:30, what is the best way to transfer to our hotel from Lisbon airport ? I suppose it is taxi, any idea how much that would cost ?

Went to est/oril at easter and the pre booked (by the hotel) taxi fare from the airport to a hotel in Estoril was 34 Euros. Hope this helps
