How are the beaches in the Cacais/Estoril area? Many of the guide books say the water can be polluted and unswimmable. Is that true? Are they very crowded in August? Can you rent beach chairs?

The beaches do get busy especially at weekends but not too overcrowded.

The beach at Praia de Dequesa is lovely , sunbeds are rentable at a very reasonable 15 euros for 2 beds per day.

Also there is a dive centre and John David watersports centre. This also has a bar and serves good food.

hope this helps!!

I was in Cascais a couple of weeks ago. There was one beach with a notice warning people not to swim there, as it used by local fishermen. There would presumably be fishing lines, bits of dead fish etc.

The others looked OK but some are quite small and I imagine that in the peak holiday season will get crowded
