Renting a Car in Sao Miguel

We are planning a trip to Sao Miguel in July and are considering renting a car for the week. There will be five of us. I have read the roads can be tricky to drive on. Has anyone driven around the island in rental car as opposed to hiring a driver or taking a tour?

"the roads can be tricky" what's your definition? As a general advice, if think you'll not be confortable doing the driving hire a driver and enjoy your time there, that's what vacations are supposed to be, enjoyment and relaxation.

It's true that there are some narrow roads in Ponta Delgada, but it's not dificult to drive around the island. If you are used to drive in big cities, so you don't need to be afraid. If you decide to hire a car, you should do it in advance, as in high season can be difficult to find the type of car you wanted to have. If you prefer not to drive and have someone to show you the island, it's also an excellent choise. If you want I can recomend some names, just let me know.

I hope you enjoy your visit to our beautiful island !!

We just arrived from a week in Sao Miguel, and spent half that time driving around the island. We found the roads excellent from end to end, with the most scenic views imaginable -- whether along the coast or inland. A "via rapida" or fast road was inaugurated connecting to the Northeast part, just a few weeks ago, so it is a breeze to drive that part of the island now. Many of the roads are curved as expected of a "mountainous" island, but they are gentle curves and are not narrow at all, and vehicles are few and far between everywhere we went, so the driving was overall, relaxed and enjoyable.

We rented from AutAtlantis, which has a very convenient office in the Portas do Mar, the seafront, close to the restaurants and just beside the marina. We opted for unlimited miles at 42 euros per day, and thought this was the best deal (we had compared with other companies), especially for more "long" drives in the island. There are no tolls to pay anywhere.

We rented a car from Ilha Verde rentals. It was very convenient for us. We took the bus from Mosteiros into Ponte Delgada and got off at the fort. The rental agency was a half block away. Simple!!

We did photo/video the car when we picked it up. And, the agent was very careful to list every scuff and mar on the paperwork. She was much more thorough than any other agent we have ever met! (One of the TA people had told me he had problems being billed after he left for a damage to the car's roof he was not responsible for so we were very attentive.) The agent also has one sign a credit card slip- the old fashioned kind which one impresses the credit card. When we returned the car, we made sure we got that paperwork. We did not want to get a bill after the fact!

One tip- be aware of gas stations in your area. When we were going to the airport, the gas station we had planned on using had a long line of cars and vehicles waiting! So, we had to go to the roundabout beyond the airport to fill up. Also, the gas station took cash only.

Rented at Hertz right from airport for 10 days in May 2012. Approx $21euros per day unlimited kilometers plus taxes. Had CDW on my credit card so passed on insurance. Got a free upgrade to desiel powered unit. Saved huge on fuel as we drove nearly 1600 Kim's in 10 days and only spent roughly 65euros in fuel. No issues with vehicle condition. Pleasurable staff. Spoke English well.
