we have a chance to come to Albufeira for a week, arriving on New Year's day 2013.. Will we have missed all the fireworks and festivities by then, and will there be plenty of places still open after the buzz of New Year's eve?

You will miss whatever happens on New year's Eve of course. New Year's Day is understandably a bit subdued and all the shops will be closed. But there are enough people around for that week taking advantage of school holidays for a winter break in better weather than Glasgow is bound to offer.
Bars and restaurants are open on New Year's Day, especially those run by expats where we shall gather for a shaky pint or two and watch the various sports on TV.

Zoo marine shut in the winter last year for the 1st time. suggest you check their web site or get back on here in a month or so. They are unlikely to reply to an enquiring email - even if written in Portuguese!! Beach party is free!!!

Beach party is free - if it happens. Last year's was rescued at the 11th hour by one of the TV companies.
Watch this space. There are unlikely to be any confirmed lineups etc until perhaps a month before.
Wet most years so bring your wet weather gear
Not so, a bit foggy maybe but not wet last year.
Last year was the most amazing new year I have had. I got a tan during the day sat outside a bar and on New Years eve I was partying on the beach with a bottle of champagne! Certainly no wet weather then. I shalll be there again this year. :)
hi what time do people start goin down to sand n sea for fireworks new years eve and are u ok to take your own drinks down or is there places selling drinks also is there any concerts playing on beach thanks :)
