Hi. I don't think this one has been mentioned and it was one of or even the most romantic of them all: Pousada Rainha Santa Isabel in estremoz. It was built by King Dinis of Portugal for his Queen, Saint Isabel. It is very weel located on the top of an hill and right at the heart of the wine route... Check the site: pousadasofportugal.com/portugal/pousada/estr… A brief resume: This beautiful Hotel Pousada is situated in a magnificent 14th Century castle built by King Dinis of Portugal for his Queen, Saint Isabel. The Pousada at Estremoz is one of the most luxurious in the group. It is a former royal residence and has a privileged position on a hilltop overlooking the little town of Estremoz. The room in which Saint Queen Isabel died in 1336 is now a small chapel in her memory. The area around the town is rich in marble which in many instances has been utilized to replace traditional building materials, giving even the smaller houses a sense of opulence. Due to its strategic hilltop position overlooking the Alentejo plains, Estremoz was one of the most important fortifications in the country and the influence of other cultures is reflected in the battlements which have a Moorish feel. Situated in the lower town is the large market square, the bustling Saturday market sells everything from olives and cheese to the locally produced red earthenware pottery. While in the area, visit the little white marble town of Borba and sample the locally produced wine which is considered to be one of the best in the country or, spend a leisurely few hours browsing through the numerous antique shops. It is a magical place... Whatever your choice is, I hope you have fun. Lis

Yes portuguesinha is right. Pousada Santa Isabel is a magic place. The legend says that Isabel, Saint and Queen of Portugal makes there a milacle. She uses to give bread to the poors, but the King - Dinis- didn't like. Once the king saw her and asked:"What have you there"? Se answered - "Roses". And when she showed to the King, the bread became roses. That's the milacre of the roses.

Thank you! Sounds just what I am looking for. May never make it back home by the sounds of it!

One more suggestion: If you Stay at Pousada Rainha Santa, go to the Restaurant “São Rosas” , (“are roses” remembering the miracle),near the pousada ,because it is itself a miracle of good taste and cooking

Thank you so much, I will check that out as well. For anyone else's information, I have checked out the LAST MINUTE prices to pousadas and they are HALF PRICE! I will be booking mine to Rainha Santa Isabel for sure. The reserved price there is $200 EURO, and the "Last Minute" price is only $53 Euro each. Awesome.

Wow that is good price, take it before it changes again... Just adding to the previous suggestion of SãõoRosas, you should also not miss a place called "Adega do Isaías" which is a typical portuguese "tasca" with typical portuguese food. Is is not fancy, not expensive but a very good and real portuguese experience. Adega do Isaías is located at the Rua do Almeida, 21 in Estremoz, Portugal. Here is one description of the place: At the Adega do Isaías you sit surrounded by huge wine pots which give the restaurant it's "Adega" name (think Bodega). Outside the Adega do Isaías is the grill upon which the best meats sizzle away. Adega do Isaías is closed on Sundays . Lining the walls are the large 1400 liter amphorae called "talha" that were used to make and store vinho de talha, a wine made the same way as the Romans did (and which is still made in the Alentejo region the same way today). Adega do Isaías serves regional specialties from the Evora district of the Alentejo region. Have fun! Lis
