Where to stay

Hello

We will be having one night in Brussels in December then catching the early morning Eurostar to London.

How far is it and what are the best options to get to the rail station for the Eurostar. We would like to stay in the middle of Brussels but not sure of transportation to/from the station

The three Brussels stations (North, Central and South) are all connected by frequent trains. Stay near the Central station (or the Grand Place) and then catch a train or cab to the station from which the Eurostar trains depart.

I like the two Ibis hotels that are near the Grand Place. If your overnight is on a weekend, you can often find them at a good price. Use their website www.accorhotels.com for the search and booking.

Don't forget you must check in for Eurostar at Bruxelles-Midi at least 30 minutes before departure.

Incidentally your Eurostar ticket can be used for free transfer by train from Midi to Central and vice versa, in each case on the date of arrival or return journey. The trip by train takes 2 minutes, whereas by taxi it would take about 10.

There are dozens of trains an hour in each direction, from Midi the easiest to find going North are probably the airport trains, identified by a small plane on the departure board, and I think they generally leave from odd-numbered platforms.

The closest hotel to Gare centrale, just across the (pedestrianised) road, is the Méridien, behind this you have the Novotel "Off Grand' Place, Ibis ditto, Best Western Carrefour de l'Europe etc., but there are plenty of other hotels in this general area: Centrale, Sandton Brussels Centre, Arenberg, Scandic Grand' Place, Aris Centre, Aris Grand' Place, Floris Arlequin...

Alternatively, Gare du Midi has good links to the Bourse and De Brouckère area by metro (underground tram), for e.g. Marriott.

I would not advise staying in the area of Gare du Midi as it's very depressing, but if you feel you must, the Ibis Gare du Midi is closest to the station, just across from the Avenue Fonsny exit (opposite side of the station from the Eurostar terminal). Hotel wise Le Méridien is excellent just across the road from the central train station.
