4 days in April, where to visit besides Keukenhof?

We will be visiting the Netherlands for 3-4 days over Easter weekend. Our home base will be out of Leiden (decent hotel deal), and we will have our car as we are driving up from Germany. The main reason for the visit is to see the Keukenhof and surrounding tulip fields.

From reading some forum posts it sounds as if you really only need one day for this. So I'm wondering what people would recommend for a couple other day trips? The coast, The Hague, Haarlem, Delft, Utrecht?

We have visited Amsterdam before and loved it. We have a daughter who will be turning 1 over Easter weekend as well and plan on bringing our bikes. We like the outdoors, historical museums, eating the local food, interesting architecture/castles/palaces/chateaus, and cities with plenty of character! Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Not far from The Hague is the seaside town of Scheveningen. There is a nice long promenade along which you could easily cycle, stopping off at the many and varied little café bars either on the beach or further back on the pavement.

What are you exactly interested in? There are so many interesting places nearby Leiden that you can visit (besides Leiden itself with its windmills). Besides the cities you already mentioned Rotterdam and Kinderdijk are nearby as well. Also check out this article about Rotterdam:

But it all depends on what you exactly would like to do.

If you're visiting cities like Delft, Rotterdam, The Hague I'd recommend you take the train. Center to center without hassle. The car will only be a burden in the cities.

Your car would enable you to visit cute villages and Kinderdijk for example.

I really like Oudewater which is a picturesque village full of canals and it also has a witch museum. Your child may not understand much of it but might enjoy being weighed on the human sized scales, and having smurf (Schlumpf) blue icecream (or normal Italian-style icecream :-)) opposite that museum.

The area around Oudewater is very pretty for cycling or a leisurely car ride, you can follow a meandering stream which I think is called Linge. There are various countryside restaurants / cafes in that area.

From Leiden you can easily visit Katwijk aan Zee or Noordwijk aan Zee beaches. Of course Scheveningen is also an option but tends to be really crowded and you'd have to drive all the way through The Hague. If you do want to go there, choose Noorderstrand which has a huge parking lot, and that might help you avoid driving through central The Hague. Meijendel is a beautiful dune area just north of Noorderstrand (but a bit too far to walk there from the beach). Meijendel also has an old-fashioned pancake restaurant.

In case you go to Kinderdijk for the windmills you may even want to take in Biesbosch nature reserve (for example go boating there), and you may even want to make a detour to the beautiful fortress town of Heusden (just see pictures in Google Images).
