What are the Specialities of Dutch Food?

I know, this is a stupid question, but I am unfamiliar with Dutch cuisine. Can someone give me an overview of what specialities the Dutch food consist of?

Also, can anyone give me some suggestions of local hangouts for good food in Amsterdam, not overpriced, just good local flavor?

I would recommend Sluizer on the Utrechtsestraat for good Dutch food at reasonable prices!

Febo may be unique in its own kind, but gastronomically incorrect : )

Dutch food: Moeders www.amsterdam.info/restaurants/moeders/

Indonesian: have a rijsttafel, one of the many restaurants serving it is Bojo Speciaal, at Leidsekruisstraat, 12. Table covered with little plates of: rice, different kinds of meat, veggies, sauces ... yummy and typical.

Sluizer has really gone down hill imo...

Don't forget stroopwafels (syrup waffles), drop (liquorice) and ofcourse typical Dutch cheeses as Edammer, Beemster, Old Amsterdam and Gouda! :-)

8. Re: What are the Specialities of Dutch Food?

lots of deep fried croquettes of various sorts including 'bitterballen' in bars

stampot which is mashed potatoes mixed with kale or sauerkraut and topped with a sausage (really good classic 'comfort food')

herring

pancake like things with toppings -- sort of like pizza with a crepe/pancake base

of course Indonesian food is common in the Netherlands -- I would pass on the rijsstaffel which usually consists of many many cheap and filling options -- it is quantity over quality -- and choose a la carte instead -- we got better food and cheaper meals doing this
