Restaurant Recommendations

You all have been so helpful, which is very much appreciated, in planning our trip next week before cruising. Our itinery is set, thanks to all the Amsterdam Experts.

First, would you please give us some restaurant recommendations between The Dylan and the Marriott Hotel on Stadhouderskade the end of our first day after a 3 hour WWII walking tour with only 4 hours sleep the night before. Something mid-priced with a quaint Dutch establishment atmosphere, with a varied menu would be awesome.

Second, a relaxing meal near the Anne Frank Huis (tour is after 4:00 English Movie) or on the way to an 18:00 guided tour of the RLD.

I did save the 7/4 post by Jools767 concerning suggestions for child friendly places; we are 8 seniors so have more flexibility :>)

Again, thanks to all for making this the trip of a lifeime for some of our group, and for me, a revisit after almost 40 years (daughter was a Rotary High School Exchange Student)!!

Very handy to the Dam & central area, and quite nice inside, "quaint", and very reasonably priced the bar area of The Hotel Port Van Der Cleve is nice. The food is pretty good, traditional Dutch food,, but it's been 2 yrs. since I have eaten there myself. I much preferred the bar area to the formal dining room because I like the old world decor with the huge blue and white tiles, the brass and copper, the old barrels, beams and high ceilings. There is some larger seating tables. See their website for photos and menu.

Cheers ,

"ddDavis1950" Your early bird comment brought an instant smile to my face!

Special thanks to all. Will welcome additional suggestions up to Saturday, August 10th.

Again, Amsterdam Experts, your quick response to my questions, from hotel, transportation issues, etc. over the last 6 months have been greatly appreciated.

An additional comment is that Indonesian 'rice table' is a phenomenon that you will not find outside the Netherlands much (except some rare places in Indonesia). It consists of many small dishes that you share. It's a leftover from colonial times in the Dutch Indies. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rijsttafel

You could try this at Long Pura, Kantjil & De Tijger, Indrapura or other places.

My favorite hidden gem, just off the Leidseplein, is de Zotte. See my TA review of the cafe. The food and service are outstanding.

You can contact the manager, Martine, thru the cafe's website and make reservations for dinner. If Niekke is working the bar, you'll have the very best service imaginable. She is quite the gem. I had dinner at de Zotte with 6 other friends (in our late 50s), and by the end of the fabulous meal, we all wanted to take Niekke back to the USA with us.

Near the Anne Frank huis is a cafe called De Prins. It's just across the canal, a 2-minute walk. De Prins is a nice brown bar.

My wife, brother, and I did the WWII walking tour with Pieter in July. It was excellent! Enjoy.
