Afternoon in Amsterdam

A couple of questions

We are two adults and two children (aged 4 and 6) and arriving into Schipol mid morning and have the rest of the day in Amsterdam (flying out the next day).

Firstly any idea how much a taxi is from the airport to the centre of town?

Where should we go - planning going around the canals - is a hop on hop cannl trip a good idea

Also probably looking at a nice place to walk around as opposed to any museums as the kids would rather be outdoors - any recommendations?

Also where is a good place to head to to get reasonable food?

Hi -

It costs about 45 euros to get a cab into town from the airport.

A canal boat tour is nice - takes about 1 hour.

Vondelpark is nice if you want to be outside, or just a nice walk around the canals, like the 9 streets or further into the Jordaan.

For dinner you can try the Pancake Bakery near the Anne Frank house, or Moeders on the Rozengracht. Pancakes are great for kids (and they can even try the mini-pancakes, called poffertjes). Or if you eat at Moeders they have a kids menu. Not many places do, which is why we like to go there. Plus they specialize in Dutch food - which is great to try in Amsterdam!

Enjoy - MMK

I would suggest the standard canal boat cruise, rather than the hoho boats as they can get busy in summer and there have been reports of people having to wait for several boats to pass before there is room on them; definitely do one though, they are great fun;

There is also the free ferry behind centraal station which goes over the Ij to Amsterdam North where the eye cinema is situated, maybe worth a try. Another option may be to try the canal bikes - these are actually like pedaloes rather than bikes with 2 pedalling seats in the front and 2 smaller seats in the rear, or a more expensive option is to hire a drive your own solar powered boat from boaty and take your own picnic on board too - we loved our timeon board and wished we had booked more time.

Have a good trip.
