Any particular type of food and what would you consider reasonable price wise?

It's in Dutch but the average menu prices, ratings and 'cuisine' descriptions should be understandable, and you can always use Google Translate. Click 'Kaart' to see them in a map and compare that to Google Maps where your hotel is.

€20/€25 per head for a dinner with appetizer (€4 - €6), main (€10-€12), a beverage (perhaps a drink €2.50 - €4) and a desert (€5 - €7) is quite cheap here and more likely to be found in a cafe with food than a nice restaurant.

Although there are lots of decent restaurants in the area it is about as upmarket as you can get so it's not really the budget end of the market. No Indonesian places nearby that I can think of so you might have to walk towards De Pijp. This place does 4 courses for 26,50

All the places serving Indonesian food. www.iens.nl/restaurant/amsterdam/indonesisch

Again, you can click 'Kaart' to see where they are. I am assuming you will visit museums and other sights in the center anyway, so why not go to a restaurant in the center after one of those days (instead of going back to your hotel first).

One place that is low key and probably less pricey is Kadijk on Kadijksplein which serves yummie Indonesian food in a cafe atmosphere. http://www.cafekadijk.nl/ (it's not far from NEMO Science museum, Artis Zoo, Dutch Resistance Museum, Brouwerij 't IJ beer brewer/cafe, Waterlooplein...).

I recently had delicious rice table at Long Pura but that is more pricey, it starts at 25 euros per person just for the rice table without drinks or desert. (There is no need to take a starter because rice table in itself already consists of many small dishes / starters.) The atmosphere and decorations were more formal. restaurant-longpura.com/cms/…202013.pdf

As for your original question, close to your hotel: check the average menu prices mentioned in the iens.nl link I posted in post #2.

The center is swarming with cheap *and* expensive places to eat, you could keep an eye on places as you wander around and check menus in the window if they have that, or walk in and ask to see the menu.

Eating falafel (in pita bread) is also a favorite of many. Maoz and other snackbars offer it. It's cheap and you can add as much salad as you want from the salad bar. There is a trick to eating it without spilling it all over yourself. :-) Or sit down at a table and eat it from a plate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falafel Obviously this is a whole different 'dining out' experience than sitting down in a fancy restaurant.
