train costs 3.90 euros per person each way; sorry I do not know the cost of the bus, but I think there is only 10 or 20 cents between so cost doesnt seem to be an issue, just pick which option is the most convenient to your final destination.

bus 197 costs 2,89 euro by chipcard, up to 4 euro if by another route (via Lelylaan)

The anonymous Chipcard is NOT suitable for 98% of the tourists due to the high overhead and other useless complexities. Hence the price given for a paper ticket, close to 4 euro, is appropiate for the tourists. Sorry...

Don't forget that arriving with the train, you still have buy a ticket for the tram to Leidseplein. (Assuming that's why you're comparing the bus with the train)

And, Mary, as a Capetonian arriving in "the old country" you will need to know that in Amsterdam a "gracht" usually has water in it. Walking along the Herengracht here will not be quite the same as walking along the He(e)rengracht in Kaapstad.
