Yes, look out for the bikes. Or, better still, look out for the bike lanes and then you will avoid the bikes.
IMO the main problem with visitors and bikes is that people don't know how to recognise a bike lane. The surface of a bike lane is often red or dark pink, and where it isn't this colour it will normally be marked with bike logos every few metres (on the ground).
Often you will see a line of parked cars and/or trees which separates the road (for vehicles) from an area close to the shopfronts which is both pavement and cycle lane. Once you get the hang of it, it is very easy to spot what is pavement and what is cycle lane, but first you have to be aware that cyclists do not use the road.
