Transit visa

Hi,I'm a South African holding a South African passport that has a valid Chinese visa. I'm travelling from Guayaquil to Hong Kong transit at Amsterdam for nine hours. Do I need a transit visa at Amsterdam ?

Hi there,

Unfortunately yes, the transit visa would be valid for all of Schengen. You'd need to show the Chinese visa to Dutch authorities in SA and proof of funds, and of course it'll cost some money.

There are two airside hotels (Mercure and Yotel) if you want to avoid the visa and stay airside.

No. The document is called an "airport transit visa", and you do not need one as long as you stay "airside" at the airport. In order to go "landside", you would need to apply to the Netherlands for a Schengen visa, which is presumably not worthwhile for a stay of only 9 hours !

Amsterdam Schiphol is divided into two areas, Schengen and non schengen. Unless you intend to leave the airport (I presume not) then as Colin rightly said no transit visa required.

Not like Erik to provide incorrect info. I presume he must have thought you were leaving airside.

Anyway if you read the top question about Schiphol there are plenty of suggestions for things to do. Loads of places to eat and shop. A librabry where you can donwload books, free wi fi for an hour. Spa's, a casino, Yotel or day room at the Mercure Erik mentioned.

You can even see some of the Rijksmuseum collection for free in the museum.

Yes sorry for the confusion. There are indeed a few rare situations when people need a transit visa even for staying airside; can't remember one for Schiphol but I know that for a few countries with lots of 'economic refugees trying to claim asylum at the first possible chance' such a visa/paper is needed at UK airports. But Amsterdam does not have that...

The list of countries whose nationals need an airport transit visa if changing planes at an airport in a Schengen Area country is contained in the document I linked to in post 2:

government.nl/issues/visa-for-the-netherland…

Scroll down to the heading "Airport transit visas". The list begins: Afghanistan, Bangladesh ...

Just below, there is a list of other countries whose nationals require an airport transit visa if changing planes at a Dutch airport. It begins: Angola, Colombia ...

Oops, another TIL. Even we have it, and indeed for this kind of 'risky' countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka,

Angola, Colombia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Nepal, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Syria and South Sudan).
