Vegetable Gardens - Amsterdam

Hi, I'm an urban vegetable gardener and would love to check out any community vegetable gardens, small organic farms, urban agriculture plots etc in or around Amsterdam. I will be visiting occasionally throughout the year.

I have visited De Kas and enjoyed exploring their greenhouse. Does anyone know of any urban vegetable gardening projects I might be able to check out? Searching online is proving challenging so I thought I'd reach out to see if anyone on this forum has suggestions. Happy to make a day trip too. Thank you!

I seen lots of them on the suburbs. I even have a friend who with a group commandeered a vacant lot for that. But in the city I don't know of anyone. If they exist they are probably on courtyards you can't see from the street

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I imagine there are many private projects around. Do you think that the vacant lot project which your friend started is one I could take a look at? I can easily bike into the suburbs.

I don't think you'll find many occurrences in cities because the Dutch have this concept of, what I believe are called, "volkstuinpark" (peoples garden park). These are garden parks, you often see from the train, that city folks can get an allotment and use the plot to grow veggies and get out of the city. You might do some research on "volkstuinparken" using google translate.

You may want to contact. Jamie Oliver's restaurant Fifteen. I seem to recall when I was there seeing something about their own organic urban garden

Does it have to be in Amsterdam? Rotterdam has a nice project called Dakakkers http://www.dakakkers.nl

Urban gardening is called "stadslandbouw" in Dutch and it is getting rather popular in recent year

They are easy to find with http://www.openstreetmap.org. All the areas marked with horizontal brown strips are urban gardens.

For example here: www.openstreetmap.org/…

Hi all,

I thought I'd reply with my findings in case anyone else is looking to visit interesting vegetable gardens & urban farms in and around Amsterdam.

Villa Augustus

In Dordrecht - less than 2hrs from Amsterdam by train. Stunning and expansive vegetable production gardens, orchard, greenhouses etc. Hotel, garden shop & terrace restaurant too.

Uit Je Eigenstad

Large scale urban farm in an empty lot in Rotterdam with restaurant and shop attached.

Restaurant Bolenius

This Amsterdam restaurant near WTC has a modest plot where they grow some crops for the restaurant.

Rijksmuseum Garden

The new gardens by the Rijksmuseum include a beautiful greenhouse with historic vegetable crops that will be included in the museum cafe menu.

Amsterdam Bos - Goat Farm (Geitenboerderij)

A 20min bike ride from Amsterdam city. This goat farm inside Amsterdam Bos (Forest) now has a sweet and carefully tended vegetable garden. They serve the harvest in the adjacent cafe.
