Thank all of you on this forum and London forum for all your good advice/comments. I just got back-last night!- from 2 weeks in Scotland and Amsterdam. So here are some comments/thoughts, etc. Scotland was wonderful-we stayed near St. Andrews-very cold, but very scenic (ok- bear with me- I know this is not the Scotland forum) Amsterdam was- WOW! So much energy-here it is- the middle of winter and the streets are packed with people and bicycles! Everywhere you look there are bikes- no wonder there are such fabulous looking people-all that exercise. We stayed at the Marriot Renaissance- we got a very good deal through some friends- good location- 5 minutes from the Central Station. Cozy bar. Even if you don't stay there, have a drink at the cafe bar. Suggestions/comments: take a canal ride early on- it's a great way to get your bearings. Things to see have been covered on this forum- we did the Museums- it's Rembrandt's 400th bday, so lots going on there, Anne Frank House- go after 5pm-no crowds at all- a very moving experience-lots of steep stairs, so a word of caution. We took the train to Haarlem one morning- well worth the trip. Terrific small restaurants/cafes. I went to Mass on Sunday at St. Nicholas, near the Central Station- wonderful old church, filled with stained-glass- the services were in Dutch, but it was a very moving experience. So much to see and do- take the trolleys-easy to get around- take the #9 trolley and go exploring. This is a great city and I hope to be back again soon. Thanks again for all your suggestions- believe me, I filled several pages of my journal with notes from this forum.
