Zurich Airport to Sihlquai

Our flight arrives from Singapore into Zurich at 6am. We are booked into a motel for 2 nights in Zurich, however checkin is 2pm and we want to see as much of Zurich as we can in the 2 full days we are there. We thought we would make our way from the airport to the Sihlquai bus terminal. Can you please tell me:

1. The best way to travel from the Airport to the Bus Terminal;and

2. Does the bus terminal have shower facilities and lockers for our luggage or are we better to have showers etc before leaving the airport.

Thank you.

The most direct route from the Airport to the city is by train to the main station, Zurich Hauptbahnhof (Hbf).

You will find all the facilties at the Hbf just follow the blue signs.

I don't understand why you would want to go to the Sihlquai other than to pick up a tour or international bus.

1. The train, in the basement of the airport there are many trains to Zürich HB (Zurich main station). The Bus terminal is right next to the main station at the north western corner. You might ask someone for direction "Sihlquai" at the main station. It's a big station, here is a plan: sbb.ch/content/sbb/de/desktop/bahnhof-servic…

2. I don't know, but you have all this at the main station.

Just as a question, what do you want to do at the bus terminal?

We were hoping to board a day tour bus at the terminal, to do some touring of the city.

Thank you both for your responses. Seeing as though we cannot checkin until 2pm we thought we would have showers either at the airport or HBF, store our luggage somewhere and jump on a bus for a day tour. Then when the bus gets back - go and check into our hotel. Otherwise, we would be just sitting around wasting 8hours in Zurich unless you can come up with a better suggestion for 2 people who have just flown for about 30 hours (incl layover in Singapore) and have a load of luggage with them? We are open to suggestions but would hate to waste this much of our 1st day there.

A bus is useless for a city tour, all you need is your own 2 feet and occasionally a short tram ride. The city tourist office in the main station has regular walking tours. The bus terminal is not something for sightseeing, its the place where bus services to Serbia or Spain are departing

Hi Jacqui B, In Switzerland generally buses are for feeder routes to nearby suburbs and villages not on the train routes.

Buses at Sihlquai will not serve your purpose.

The old town of Zurich is mainly a pedestrian only area. Tourist buses stop at the foot of steps and then you walk or climb. With a day ticket (meaning 3 zones including the airport) you can hop on hop off as many times as you like within the zones whether by train, trams, funicular, buses or ferry.

You mentioned a motel (motor-hotel) being booked. Would you care to disclose the name and address? Do you plan to drive there? Frankly I worry that it may not be close to anywhere convenient, certainly not HB.

We just arrived in Zurich main train station today and noticed that there are very large lockers you can store your luggage in, if you want to go out touring the old town area until you can get into your room. Generally the hotels will store your bags for you until your room is ready, if you go and drop them off, perhaps you can check with them.

All of the advice here is very good. The Shilquai bus "terminal" (note - it is a one room waiting shed) is across the street from the very back exit of the main train station - all of the services and conveniences you will need will be at the train station. So, to recap:

1. There are showers and facilities at both the Airport Arrivals area and at the train station (both available as a pay service unless you are flying Biz Class on Swiss)

2. Buy a 24hr TRAIN ticket from the airport to the city - or a Zurich-Card (see point 7) - these will be valid for ALL public transport: train, bus, tram, boat... for the next 24hrs)

3. Take the TRAIN from the airport to Zurich HB (main station).

4. Put your luggage into a locker (one level below the main concours hall - you will need CHF cash - but there is a machine that will give change from CHF bills)

5. Visit the Tourist Office in the main concourse hall (they can give you maps or advise on tours and walking routes)

6. Go forth out into the city to explore... by foot, tram, city bus, boat...

I think you will find that the downtown is VERY compact (!!) and that you can easily kill 6hrs without getting lost and without a "tour".

7... and if the morning is super sunny and beautiful,... then while at Zurich HB, think about heading directly down to platform 3 (underground on the south side of the hall) and taking the train up to the top of Mnt Uetliberg (the "mountain" overlooking ZH). This takes a couple hours (return) but after a long flight it will be relaxing, you can get a good coffee and croissant at the top, and it will give you a great overview of the entire city, the lake, and the Alps in the distance.

Bon Voyage!
