Free or inexpensive car parking

We are driving to Zurich next week and would like to know what is the cheapest way we can park the car for 2 nights (we do not need to use the car in Zurich)

Is there a park and ride service outside the town, or something similar?

If not, where can we find relatively inexpensive parking?

Thanks

1. Re: Free or inexpensive car parking

Park and Ride facilites are restricted to those who have season tickets on the trains and busses.

I suppose you would have to find a suburban town with free parking which is also not very likely.

There is a large parking garage - Urania - in the middle of Zurich and you can park there for around 30frs/24 hours. It has surveilance whch is a good thing. I would not want to leave a car, especially a rental car, on the street in an area I didn't know for several days, even here in Switzerland.

If it is a rental car why not drop the car on arrival in ZH and then re-rent when you are ready to leave?

Park and Ride are not restricted to those with season or any train tickets.

Parking costs between CHF 4.00 and CHF 6.00 per day.

I am not sure this is correct - the large "P+R" lots are restricted. There is parking at the stations for other passengers. Here it costs 12frs/day without a train ticket. 6frs with one.

6. Re: Free or inexpensive car parking

I believe that all of these are car parks at the stations. Not the P+R I was referring to. In this part of Switzerland anyway (the Valais) finding a place on a daily basis at the station is like finding a golden egg. The P+R's are huge but are on the outskirts of the towns and you need to take a navette from them into town. And you need a subscription...

I suppose Rister is talking about the P&R facilities from the Swiss Railway and Hambagahle is referring to the city owned P&R facilities like the one in Altstetten (I have no idea regarding occupancy rates, costs or restrictions). As an absolutely free however not completely legal alternative one could mention parking facilities of suburban malls or shopping centres (e.g. Glatt Zentrum, Interio Dübendorf). These parking spaces are of course restricted for people visiting the respective shops, but leaving your car there for only 2 days, (most likely I probably should mention ;-) won't raise any suspicion and there is no barrier or any type of electronic time control.

Cheers,

b
